[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Lammergeier or Bearded Vulture
Lat : Gypaetus barbatus aureus
Tur : Sakallı Akbaba

The Lammergeier is best identified by its unique outline. It's the sort of shape that a science-fiction artist might make up - huge and fearsome with exceptionally long, relatively narrow, pointed wings and a diamond-shaped tail that's so long it seems to trail as the bird glides by. The impression is sometimes of a vulture-sized falcon. What colours would an artist choose for such a bird? Well, black of course but with a contrastingly orange head and body, a dangling black moustache and flaming red eyes. Juvenile birds are duller and just look mostly dark although their paler bodies contrast especially with an all-dark head. Even if such shades aren't obvious, the huge size and spectacular shape will clinch identification.

Present all year in the highest parts of mountain ranges, occasionally coming to lower altitudes, eg. to rubbish tips, in winter.

Reliable sites include the Hecho Valley (Spain) Gavarnie (France), the top of the Samaria Gorge (Crete) and Mount Uludag (Turkey). For the most spectacular views, try San Juan de la Pena (Spain).

Only 83-91 breeding pairs in Europe. Turkey has a population of 100-500, with small populations also found in Albania (5-10), France (25), Greece (10-20) and Spain (45-55). Russian population 20-40 .

Hello Akif,

Excellant capture. Exotic bird.

Subhayan.

I definitely would have mistaken this for a falcon. A nice in flight shot.
I am surprised at the details you managed for that speed.
Again...the difference in Canon vs Nikon.
There is a bit of underexposure, but for this distance I think it turned out well.
One more bird I have not seen yet. TFS
