Dear Friends,

i am sure that the quality of this picture is not perfect but i wished to share this since Ardahan province is one of the most easternparts of Anatolia and it is not easy to reach the scientists (ornithologists) collecting data. Thus, i thought it may be provide any distributional knowledge on the species which i could not success to find its exact id.

i think it may be a buzzard (long legged?) but i am not sure.It would be nice if a friend could give its exact id. i also attached a WS for helping on the identification of the species.

i encountered with this raptor while i was driving and the wheather was rainy-windy near the Kura River. i could took some shots from the window of my car (approx 100m distance).

Hope you can like this and WS version.
TFS and Happy WE!
Cheers,

Circus aeruginosus (Marsh Harrier) [in Turk. Saz Delicesi] (Female)

Marsh harriers are recognised as harriers by their long, narrow tails, long legs and wings held in a 'V' in flight. This species is the largest of the harriers and has broad, rounded wings. Members of the genus Circus possess an owl-like 'ruff' of facial feathers that disguises very large ear openings, which enable the bird to detect prey species by the noises they produce. The plumage colour is variable, but mainly brown. Females and immature individuals have creamy coloured crowns and throats; mature males have pale-grey wings with a dark brown body and wings. Calls include a lapwing-like mewing and a 'chattering' alarm call.

Marsh harriers are found in Europe, the Middle East, Central and northern Asia, and parts of Africa. During the breeding season, pairs form which may last for a number of seasons. The spectacular courtship display involves the male flying in circles at a great height over the breeding area before falling close to the ground, performing elaborate sequences of tumbles. Occasionally the female may join him, and the pair lock talons and tumble through the air together. As the season progresses the male may be seen dropping food into the female's talons in mid-air. The nest, which may measure up to 80cm in diameter, is constructed on the ground with grass, reeds and sticks by the female. 3-8 eggs are laid from late April, and both parents contribute to feeding the chicks. Hunting occurs at a height of 2-6 meters above ground; when prey is located the bird suddenly drops down with its talons outstretched. Food taken includes small mammals and birds, carrion and sometimes insects, frogs and fish.

Mehmet.

Tam bir aksiyon... dinamik bir fotoğraf olmuş kankam.
Eline ve emeğine sağlık.
Gökhan

Hi LBB.

It's so nice to see so much of you while you are traveling. So this is what a Marsh Harrier looks like - I have not seen one before. I love how he is carrying his pray in his claws. A nice pose showing off those wonderful wings.

Jane

Most obviously this is a case where teh opportunity and the rare capture and notes superseded any problems with the photo..and THAT is what nature is about to me....the combination of art, philosophy and science..I don't ask much eh?:-)

Hi little bro Bayram,

Hello Bayram,
Thank you for your kind words on completing my third anniversary with TN!
An excellent in-flight capture of a female Marsh Harrier
+: DOF, POV, BG, composition, colours and lighting.
-: none, really as it is difficult to achieve great sharpness with in-flight shots and I have yet to take a good shot of this species.
Thanks again Dostum and best regards,
Ivan

Merhaba MF Bayram,
no matter what the capture is very good. The action is well taken at its perfect moment. The effect of the grasses is quite impactful in giving this shot an oustanding one, still.
Well done.

regards,
Foozi

A lovely in flight shot, Big Bro!
