Argynnis pandora (=Pandoriana pandora) (Cardinal) [in Turk. Bahadır] (Male)

Today, a very beautiful and large fritillary which I encountered and captured -(at focal length of 370 mm)- in Hasanlar Village (Yığılca, Düzce province) during my Black Sea trip and I would like dedicate this beauty to one of my PhD Students and also a TN member, Bahadır (bahadir) who has the same name with its Turkish name of this butterfly:) and also accompany with me during the trip. Hope you can like this Bahadır!

The Cardinal is a relatively rare and very large butterfly with a wingspan of 60-75 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is yellow-brown, with green shading mainly on the hindwing. Parallel with the outer margin are several series of black marks. The underside ground colour is yellow-green. On the forewing, there is a large area of bright red. Also on the forewing there are scattered black marks. On the hindwing there is a series of smail white marks and a white line with silver highlights parallel with the outer margin. The female is usually larger than the male. The upperside has a greener hue than that of the male and on the underside there are larger and more pronounced silver-white marks, which create characteristic silver bands.

The Cardinal is a species of southern Europe, North Africa and central-western Asia, including Cyprus.

It is on the wing from the end of May until the beginning of November in a single brood. Overwinters in the larval stage, completing development the following spring. The larval host-plants are various species of violet (Viola spp. Such as, Viola sieheana, Viola adorata and Viola alba). It is found on agricultural land, forest, rocky slopes, river valleys and gardens from 500 m to 1700 m (2500 m in N. Africa). Attracted to nectar-rich flowers such as Onopordum spp., Centaurea spp., Cirsium vulgare (Spear Thistle) and cultivated Buddleja davidii (Buddleia).

A great macro capture of the Cardinal Fritillary butterfly!
The sharpness and well-chosen POV with shallow DOF, collectively give great results here. The colors are very natural. I like the eyes of the butterfly, as they are so well shown. Frame suits well to the picture, as always. Great composition!

How fortunate Bahadir must be to have such a beauty carry the same name as he does. I wonder if there is somewhere a butterfly that carries the name Anna? This is a real beauty. The autumn colours and patterns on the wings is a real delight to look at. I like the point of view where one can see both sides of the wings, it is astounding how the under and upper details can differ. I also like the beautiful flower you have captured it on, as the light played in your favour at this one. The colours of both the butterfly and flower display so beautifully on the screen. Very nice shot of this "Bahadir"!!!

I like your POV letting us see the wings both sides. The color are very nice and the exposition very well managed.

The only thing is that I would have removed the second flower at the bottom right and that I can see some posterization in the background.
