Vipera ammodytes meridionalis (Horned Viper, Long-nosed Viper, Nose horned Viper)

Vipera ammodytes is a venomous viper species found in southern Europe through to the Balkans including Anatolia and some parts of the Middle East.
It is reputed to be the most dangerous of the European vipers due to its large size, long fangs (up to 13 mm) and high venom toxicity.
The specific name is derived from the Greek words ammos and dytes, meaning "sand" and "burrower" or "diver"; not a very good name for an animal that actually prefers rocky habitats.
The most distinctive characteristic is a single "horn" on the snout, just above the rostral scale. It consists of 9-17 scales arranged in 2 (rarely 2 or 4) transverse rows. It grows to a length of about 5 mm and is actually soft and flexible.
In southern subspecies, i.e. V. a. meridionalis, the horn sits vertically upright as seen in photo. The subspecies in here is known also as “Eastern sand viper”. It is distributed in Greece, Aegean Islands, Turkish Trace and the northern parts of W Anatolia including Kocaeli and Bursa provinces.
Finally, today I dedicate this photo heartfelt and kind friends, Ivan Kruys (Argus) and his nice wife Ulla Kruys (Uleko) whose are also experienced members of TN and admirers of Cyprus-my homeland-, for their kind interest to me and my herpetological captures.

First of all I belive that it is a very good dedication for our TN friends Ulla and Ivan :)
Second, the quality of this viper portrait looks is really nice (it looks very dangerous! :>). Am I right that this is one of the most dangerous veper species in Turkey?
Bravo and thank you for showing this photo!

Hi Bayram,
A nice capture of this horned viper. I have seen this in TV on Animal Planet. It is the most poisonous viper found in entire Europe. Very well composed with excellent details. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Thank you, Bayram!
We are honoured to have this dedication, especially as the image that goes with it is so fine!
You show this Horned Viper from a great POV in a fine threatening pose with good sharpness and set in a superb composition.
We must try to meet this beauty in the wild and try to take as good a shot as this though I would need 3-4 meters distance.
Thanks again my friend!
Ivan

Merhaba Bayram,
Many thanks for your kind dedication! I'm very glad you have joined our TN community!
This is a splendid capture of this venimous snake with a zig-zag pattern like our Adder and a little nose! Excellent composition showing sharp details. Do you find this on Cyprus as well?
TFS and kind regards, Ulla

Bayram merhaba,

Selamlar Bayram,
Again, a perfect portrait my friend, utilizing, besides the viper, our famous "woodwork" as a trademark of our Dept. of Zoology! I'm sure dear Ulla and Ivan would be delighted with your thoughtful dedication. Thanks for sharing this beauty with our friends in TN.

Hi Bayram

This is yet another splendid adition to your portfolio and a great portrait of one of the most beautiful snakes in Europe.
I too have had the pleasure of seeing this animal in real life a few times and also took some photos of it. I really hopoe to see it again this year, too, during our studies in the southern part of Romania.

Your photo shows well the two key features of this species - the great "nose" and the gorgeous pattern on its back.
The colors are nice and natural and the details very sharp.
A lovely presentation and dedication.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Ben yine Hocam! bütün fotoğraflarınızı tamamlayacağım. Çok güzel bir engerek çekim olmuş. Hayvandaki hareket dahi fotoğrafta hissediliyor. Teşekkürler.
