Cyclamen persicum (Persian Cyclamen ) [in Turk. Siklamen, Yer Somunu; In Hebrew רקפת מצויה]

I photographed this showy-beautiful cyclamen during our herpetological trip to SE Anatolia near the Yilankale Castle (Adana province). When I took this shot I did not notice that an ambusher Crab spider, Thomisus onustus- (I think)-present on its flowers. After looking the shot in my camera screen, I saw a crab spider surprisingly :) I took an additional shot in WS to show the crab spider.

Also yesterday, surprisingly once more! :D I noticed that one of our beloved friends and great photographers in TN Ori Fragman SAPIR (fragman) -who is expert on bulbs and orchids of the Middle East- has reached and overcome 10.000 pts with a great number of postings (979). This number is really great and also amazing contribution to TN and us. Therefore, today I would like to dedicate this beautiful cyclamen and crab spider configuration to thank to him for his all valuable contribution to TN and our knowledge! Thanks a lot Ori for all everything! I wish you all the best my friend! Hoping that you like this shot!

Cyclamen is a genus of 20 species of flowering plants, traditionally classified in the family Primulaceae, but in recent years reclassified in the family Myrsinaceae. The genus is most widely known by its scientific name cyclamen being taken into common usage; other names occasionally used include sowbread and sometimes, confusingly, persian violet (it is not related to the violets), or primrose (neither is it a primrose).

Cyclamens are native to the Mediterranean region from Spain east to Iran, and also in northeast Africa south to Somalia. They are perennial herbaceous aestivating plants, with a surface or underground tuber (derived from the hypocotyl) 4-12 cm diameter, which produces leaves in late winter, and flowers in the autumn; the leaves die down during the hottest part of the Mediterranean summer drought to conserve water. Each leaf or flower grows on its own stem, which shoots up from the hypocotyl. The variegation is thought by some botanists to be a form of natural disruptive camouflage to reduce grazing damage by animals.

The hypocotyl grows leaves and flowers on stems, either one flower or one leaf per stem. The stem for leaves and flowers appears identical except in height. The leaves grow on stems of around 6cm height. The leaves grow on stems up to 8cm tall and form a tightly bunched circular disk of leaves. Leaves are rounded to triangular, 2-10 cm long and 2-7 cm broad, and usually variegated with a pale silvery horseshoe-shaped mark round the middle of the leaf.The top of the leaf is split with the split extending to the connection with the stem.

The stems for flowers rise from the middle of the disk of leaves. The stem for flowers grows up to 12 cm tall, and the end of the flowers stem curves 150 - 180 degrees downward. The flower bud terminates the stem. The various cultivars produce flowers with either four or five united petals growing from the edge of the flower bud. The petals are usually reflexed back 90° to 180° to be erect above the flower bud, and vary from white through pink to red-purple, most commonly pale pink.

The fruit is a five-chambered capsule 1-2 cm diameter, containing numerous sticky seeds about 2 mm diameter. Natural seed dispersal is by ants, which eat the sticky covering and then discard the seeds. Cyclamens are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including The Gothic.

Cyclamens typically grow in dry forest or scrub, where they are at least partly shaded from intense sunlight. The species vary greatly in winter frost tolerance, with the hardiest species (C. hederifolium) tolerating temperatures down to -15°C, or -30°C if covered by snow; others, such as C. somalense from northeastern Somalia, do not tolerate any frost at all. Certain climate change models suggest many species could become extinct in their current range within the next 50 years.

Cyclamen persicum grows wild in south western Turkey, The Hatay and Adana Provinces of southern Turkey, Cyprus, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, the Greek islands of Rhodes, Karpathos and Crete, Algeria and Tunisia.

C. persicum grows in a variety of habitats: maquis, garigue, open scrub, rocky hillsides, abandoned olive groves, or in woodland. It grows from Sea Level to 1200m. It is found growing on graves in the old Turkish Cemetery in Rhodes Town, and in snow on the top of the Golan Heights in Israel.

The flowers are generally white (sometimes a soft pink, or with a pink flush) with a deep pink or crimson-magenta zone at the base of each petal, however there is an albino form, which is found in the east of its range, and a form with deeper pink or almost cerise flowers is found in two populations on the island of Karpathos. The petals vary between 20-37mm (0.8 - 1.5 inches) long and 10-18mm (0.4 - 0.75 inches) wide. The flowers appear between December and early May. The leaves are cordate, up to 14cm (5.6 inches) long and up to 13.5 cm (5.4 inches) wide, and green, often with marbling on the upper surface. A silver-leafed form also exists.

Hallo Bayram
This is a lovely dedication to Ori. A very special image with clear and prominent details. I have never seen a flower with such unusual shape and features. The bottom of the flower strongly reminds me of a pit of a candle. The spider alongside the flower makes this image even more spectacular.

A lovely dedication to Ori - one I am certain he will appreciate. This flower is so graceful looking. The colors are beautiful with the dark bottom and the shades gradually lightning. The base of the flower reminds me of the base of a light bulb. The crab spider is a wonderful bonus.

I was amazed to see how these little Cyclamens appear out of the rocks on Cyprus. They're so beautiful and I like the way you've captured this single one together with a little visitor! Nice grasses in front too. Fine sharp details and beautiful colours. Lovely!
