Phoenicolacerta laevis (Hatay or Syrian Lizard) (An Adult Female)

Yesterday I uploaded a well-developed "handsome" male from Çamlıyayla (İçel=Mersin province), in June 2007 and today I posted this "elegant-beautifull" female from the same location to show the difference between the sexes in general view. Males have a wider head than females:) and also, females have a wider abdomen than males. This situation is valid for all lacertid lizards.

This is my fovourite lizard species since it was my first research study on Herpetology (Amphibian and Reptiles Research Science). This medium-sized lizard with relatively long head has a pointed snout and dark lateral bands. Typically, a large masseteric scale is present (this feature is same in P. troodica known from Cyprus, however it is the main distinguishing feature from P. kılzeri known from Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Jordan). The other main distinguishing features between these closely related species was given in my previous two [ 1 – 2 ] posting. Therefore, I do not mention here again.

And finally, today I would like to dedicate this photo to my close friend, professional colleague, and also my first supervisor on herpetology, Professor Abidin BUDAK.

Excellent shot of this female Syrian Lizard!
The detail in the scales is very impressive.
I like the diagonal composition.

Ben de Çamlıyayla'ya sanırım 3 defa gittim. Hatta 2400 metrelere kadar çıkmıştık yazın bir kar traktörünün arkasında. Her tarafımız toz olmuştu ama keyifliydi. Dağın başından Spalax yakalamıştık. Oraladra bu kertenkeleden görmüşüzdür ama adını sanını bilmediğimizden dikkat etmedik hiç. Bu foto çok güzel olmuş. Oraya tekrar gidersem özel olarak görmeye çalışacağım bu vatandaşı. Eline sağlık. je vois que vous faite beaucoup dans les reptiles,ici il n'y en a pas beaucoup et ils sont tres mefiants donc dur a approcher.
le votre est bien net(a part un peu le museau)avec beaucoup de details au niveau des pattes.

Hi Bayram,

It's so nice to see the female of this species after meeting the male. Wonderful notes spelling out the differences. She has beautiful markings. What really captures my attention is the "toes." Interesting how she spreads the rear one while she does her push-ups.

Anothe interesting reptile from your (so huge!!!) collection! I really believe that very soon all Turkish species of lizards, snakes, tortoises, terrapines and others will be here on TN! :)
