Salamandra infraimmaculata orientalis (Turkish Fire Salamander) [in Turk. Türk Lekeli Semenderi]

Dear Friends, this photo is a special gift to my close friend and professional colleague Dr. Mehmet K: ATATUR (matatur) who is also one of the first students of Professor Muhtar BASOGLU (First Turkish Herpetologist).

Salamandra inframaucalata is a thick bodied robust salamander with a maximum total length of about 25-32 cm. The females are usually larger than males, and also the cloacal region is more swolen in males. The cross-section of the relatively short tail is roundish. This species has no coloration on the belly, the underside is completely black. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry shrubland, rivers, and freshwater springs. It is threatened by habitat loss. The appearence of this species is quite different among subspecies. The photographed specimen here collected from a damp forest of a mountainous plateu at high elavation (approx. 1500 meters) of Kahramanmaras province and it is represented with the subspecies of S. i. orientalis. This subsp. in appearence about the same as S. i. infraimmaculata, but has larger, yellow spots over the whole body, exept the belly. Known from the Southern, central and eastern Turkey (Adana, Erzincan, Bitlis, Hatay –Western parts of Amanos Mts.).

The detailed information of the species was given in another (-whole-) capture of the species) from Çamardı (Niğde province). Thus, no more additional knowledge is present here.

quite the eye catcher with that colorful marking, can't be easy for them to hide.
Very well captured, the POV shows off a lot of detail.

what a strikingly coloured Salamander!
The only time I've seen one of these is when I was 5 or 6 years old and in Italy visiting my Nonno... sadly it wasn't alive and had been hit my a car :-(
You got a nice image of this perfect specimen.
DOF is a bit shallow but everything else is exceptional!
Very good composition and POV.
Eye-catching colours and great light.
Are your shots taken in the wild or in a fake setting? I know the animals themselves are wild but the light is so good in all the shots I just wondered whether it was not the sun! :-)

Hi Bayram,

I remember this salamander - you showed it with a little one previously. I'm still amazed by the wonderful colors and patterns. The skin almost looks irridescent - it has such a shine. Another great eye.

What a wonderful surprise my friend, I was a little late in entering the TN this evening and just now saw your fine dedication carried out expertly, as usual. One of my favourite urodeles in its usual coloration finery, and this one clearly displays the characteristic mediodorsal poison glands between two yellow maculations right behind the head. Very informative capture indeed!

This is a very interesting Salamandra species, and very nice dedication to our TN colleague :)
I like composition and colouration of this picture. On the other hand DOF would be a little better especially on amphibian head. Anyway, this is another very good lesson of herpetology! :)
