Eirenis decemlineata (Narrow-striped Dwarf Snake)

It is the largest snake amongst the aglyphous (non-venomous) genus representatives with a maximum total length of about 70 cm. The head is oval, distinct from the neck. The eyes have round pupils. The body scales are smooth and they ordered into 17 longitudinal rows in midbody. Anal plate divided. The dorsum colour is pale brown with 10 thin dark longitudinal lines extending from neck to tail, the four medial ones are mostly more distinct than the lateral ones. Occasionally some individuals are uniform. The venter is uniformly yellowish or whitish.

It can mostly be found hidden under stones. It is a diurnal snake and not active in the hottest times. It feeds on various invertebrate animals, such as orthopterans, spiders, scorpions and centipedes.

It is distributed in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Iraq and Iran. In Turkey, this species is known from the SE and E Anatolian regions in an altitudinal range of 300-2000 m. It prefers the habitats with light soil, stones and bushy vegetation and found under stones.

Photographed specimen collected from a hill with lava boulders of Kilis province during our herpetological trip in May, 2007.

And today, I would like to dedicate this capture to our friend in TN, Haraprasan Nayak (haraprasan).

Hi Bayram

Great picture of this elegant terrestrial, constrictor (my guess)! I think this one moves very fast. I like those huge pupils. Excellent composition and DOF and good natural colors.

Hi Bayram,
THANK YOU VERY MUCH for this lovely and cute snake (because of non-venomous). Excellent composition and details. I like it very much. BTW is it a constrictor or some thing else. Once again thank you very much for this lovely dedication.

Best Regards
Haraprasan.
