I hear some stories from various parts of Anatolia. One of them is similar and related with its tail (metasoma) segments. If a scorpion more segments, it has more venomous or more dangerous. This segments numbers arrive to 13. This is funny and wrong story. All scorpions have only six segment on their metasoma (tail). I never see or read seven or more segment, but I know that several scorpions have double tails. Of course, this was anomaly for the scorpions.
Today's post is a very dangerous scorpion species, Leiurus quinquestriatus Ehrenberg, 1829 - Siyahkuyruklu Akrep [TR], Deathstalker [EN] (SCORPIONES: BUTHIDAE). It is one of 17 species of the Turkish scorpions and the most dangerous species with LD50 0.25 mg (lethal dose). It can be identify with dark fifth segment on its tails.
The scorpion ranges in North Africa and the Middle East. It prefers deserts and scrublands.
As for our story, Ferhat showed me first specimen in Ravanda Castle (Kilis: Musabeyli) near Syrian border, when we searched bat species in there at the mid-night. Scorpiones are nocturnal animals and they emerge after dusk. Several minutes later we saw second one and third ones (see Workshop). They must be common here. The species occurs in Hatay, Kilis, Gaziantep, Adıyaman provinces of Turkiye. This area, especially Kilis, is very important zoogeographically. Eremial (desertic) forms introduce into Anatolia, passing the lowlands between Hatay and Urfa. Most of eremial forms range only this area.
The photograph was taken Sony Cyber-Shot compact camera in natural biotop at mid-night. We used only a small torch. I hope you will like this post.

nice one, its nice to see how dark the last joint is, greetings Ori

Hi Ahmet

Because it is the first and only image of this scorpion on the site this Deathstalker goes straight to my theme for "RARE or SIGNIFICANT contributions to TN". From the way this one had its tail lifted up it looks like it's ready and eager for action. I have heard that the thicker a scorpion's tail and the smaller its pinchers the deadlier it is. I'm not sure if this is true, but looking at this one it seems there might be some truth to the story.

You did well to capture this one with just the torch light. Some of the rocks seem a bit bright, but the scorpion is spot-on with excellent details of all its features. The composition has good placing of the subject and sufficient space for movement. Very interesting note as well and the workshop also looks great.

Well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. I've done a quick workshop just to see if I could address the brightish stones. I hope you like it.

Merhaba Ahmet,
Congratulations on this unique post, a first for TN!
You captures this scorpion with good sharpness and from a great POV and the slight overexposure by flash was well corrected by Loot.
Your wife must be pleased that you and your collegue were able to record this species and capture it so well in a photo!
Thanks for showing us this impressive L. quinquestriatus (Striated on the 5th segment of the tail)
Best wishes my friend,
Elinize saglik,
Ivan

Hi Ahmet

Excellent pov and great exposure here - and congratulations on your first.

James

Hi Ahmet!
Wow, it is really easy to recognize this species, and it is really a dangerous one! Only 0.25mg! It is not good to walk there without shoes ;)
Very nice macro and very unique presentation (not the fist according to scorpions).
By the way, this year I was looking for some Euscorpius species in Greece, but without any success. Maybe next near in some Middle East coutries? :)
TFS and have a great weekend!
Best withes from rainy Lodz,
Radomir

Hello Ahmet,
I've only once encountered a tiny Scorpion and don't particularly wish to meet any larger specimens especially as they seem to move around in the dark! This is a splendid capture though using artificial light and looking very natural. Excellent sharpness and good colours in this fine composition.
TFS and best wishes, Ulla

Hello Ahmet,

Hello Ahmet,
Excellent photo of this Scorpion. Great first contribution to TN. Excellent colours, with a good use of flash. Very sharp and an outstanding POV.
Kind regards,
Peter

Merhaba Ahmet,

A really great shot & detail of this poisonous scorpion. That stinger looks shiny with a sharp penetrating tip. Those tail segments appear very flexible as they do help the scorpion to strike in any direction. TFS.

Hi Ahmet,
Great capture with very good detail..
I just shot a Black Imperial Scorpion this Sunday with prey, a first of the species for me. Their sting is mild compared to this one..Anyway :)
Well done,

Hello Ahmet,
I see you are specilising in photographing scorpions. Very nice shot of this deadly creature with a hint how to recognize it. I like very much such informative contributions. How many scorpion species do you have in Turkey?
Best greetings,
Michal
