[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After many posts, I came back to my main subject, bats. Up to now, I have written many thing about them. You can also visit the Theme Bats - CHIROPTERA.
Many people dont know much about them and so thought wrongly that they are very dangerous and bad animals.
Actualy, the bats are very useful animals, since each of them eat thousands vermins (insects) in per night. Also they dont attach human beings, contrastly known.

Up to now, I have posted twelve bat species from Turkiye and Syria from the family PTEROPODIDAE (Fruit bats), RHINOLOPHIDAE (Horse-shoe bats), VESPERTILIONIDAE (Evening bats) and MINIOPTERIDAE (Long-winged bats). But two other families are also represented in Turkiye: EMBALLONURIDAE and MOLOSSIDAE.

The family Emballonuridae occurs in Africa, the Middle East and Oriental [Indian] Region, similar to distribution of the family Pteropodidae and both of them dont range in Europe, except for Turkiye.
You will see an Emballonurid bat with my next post. Today's post is from the family Molossidae and it is Tadarida teniotis- Serbestkuyruklu Yarasa, Buldog Yarasa [TR], European Free-tailed Bat [EN].
It is one of largest species of Eupean bats, with forearm lenght of 60-65 mm and weight of 30-39 gr.
Free-tailed bat ranges in South Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Southern parts of Asia eastwards to Korea and China. In Turkiye, it occurs allmost all regions, but its records have came mostly from bat detectors. It flies at the highest level (from ground) among all European bats. These bats dont use cave and they prefer rocky crevices in cliffs (mostly dangerous) for roosting. So, bat searchers cant easly arrive them.

Ferhat Toprak and me found it in Birecik District (Ş.Urfa Prov.). The shot was taken by a compact camera in natural habitat.
You can see its face and tail, which its 2/3 projects beyond the end of the uropatagium (tail membrane). Its face is similar to one of bulldog and it is different with free tail from other European bats. Their tails dont project more than 1-2 mm after uropatagium.

Thanks for visiting.

Hi Ahmet,

A fantastic close-up of this bat. Great timing to capture him with his mouth open like that. Excellent details, textures and colors but I'm afraid I will never find them beautiful. I think I've been brainwashed to be afraid of them.

hi Ahmet

It is most difficult to frame a bat inside a dark cave and the use of flash is really the sensible choice for metering purpose of a good exposure and I also can see why the color contrast is not easy to stand out for the bat and its surrounding.

Despite the difficulties you were able to show sharp detail of the bat especially the eye. And I have to remember you were shooting upward.

tfs, bill

Very good work Ahmet, I like it!
Most of all I like the open mouth & POV showing those "bat-teeth" so well..
Can't say I've seen such a good bat closeup in quite awhile.
Hats-off to you, great catch :)
Howard

Çok güzel bir belge fotoğraf olmuş Ahmet bey, ellerinize sağlık, selamlar.

What a fine capture Ahmet, of this bat with a strange tail, and that open mouth with a lot of sharp teeth does not look so harmless my friend! A good pose demonstrating the upside-down hanging technique too. TFS this interesting image amigo...

Merhaba Ahmey Hocam,

Great captured with all the detail. I like the perfect timing that shows the teeth.
You're indeed a bat specialist.
I didn't go for Hajj this year (done that in 2003), always been busy with my general practice to shoot more nature pictures.
Best regards,
