Rüppell's Warbler

Binomial name:
Sylvia rueppelli
Temminck, 1823, Crete

TR.Name: Karaboğazlı ötleğen

Scientific classification :
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Aves
Order: Passeriformes
Family: Sylviida
Genus: Sylvia
Species: S. Rueppelli

The Rüppell's Warbler Sylvia rueppelli, is a typical warbler of the genus Sylvia. It breeds in Greece, Turkey and neighbouring islands. It is migratory, wintering in north east Africa. This is a rare vagrant to western Europe. The name is occasionally cited as "Rueppell's Warbler".

These are small typical warblers, similar in size but slimmer than the Sardinian Warbler. The adults have a plain grey back and paler grey underparts. The bill is fine and pointed and the legs brown. The male has a black head and, usually, a black throat, separated by a white malar streak ("moustache"). The eye is red. Females have a pale throat, and the head is grey rather than black. Their grey back has a brownish tinge. The song is a slower, deeper rattle than that of Sardinian Warbler.

Together with the Cyprus Warbler it forms a superspecies with dark throats, white malar streaks and light remiges fringes. This in turn is related to the species of Mediterranean and Middle East Sylvia warblers that have a naked eye-ring, namely the Subalpine Warbler, Sardinian Warbler and Ménétries's Warbler. Both groups have a white malar area, but this may not form a clear streak in the latter group; above the white, the heads of males are uniformly dark.(Helbig 2001, Jĝnsson & Fjeldsċ 2006)

These small passerine birds are found in thick thorny shrubs. Four to six eggs are laid in a nest in a bush. Like most warblers, this species is insectivorous.

It is named after the German collector Eduard Rüppell.

Hello Fikret. This bird is so well captured. You have created some brilliance though excellent sharpness and clarity of the image for a not so colorful bird. Well managed light and shadow with good depth blurring the pleasant contrasting background. Very well perched exposing fabulous plumage and pose nicely on the colorful branch. Excellent capture of top quality image and very well done. Have a wonderful weekend. Jusni

Hi Fikret,

A lovely little bird with such pretty greys and blacks. The shadings are beautiful with the silver tones. Very good details - I love the orange eye. A wonderful pose and a lovely setting.

Sevgilerimle,
MEhmet

Spectacularly sharp image Fikret!
The amount of detail in the feathers is amazing!
Great composition and POV.
It's a shame the head is in shadow but that's not a big problem.
Great BG-blurring DOF and pin-point focusing.
Well done!

Joe

p.s thankyou very much for adding me as a favourite :-)

No doubt, Fikret:
Very good image.
Excellent DOF, light, colours,...

Hi Fikret.
I do not trust, that you do not use the 3D-camera. How do you get such three-dimensional effect? Stunning scene and terrific by quality picture. All is simply outstanding. My congratulations and Bravo.

Hallo Fikret
I just love the picture you have of yourself on your intro page. Very comical. One of the streets in our town is called Warbler Avenue. I never knew how this bird look, but now I know. Wonderful pose of this warbler on the colourful branch. The plumage is displayed well, showing all the pretty black and grey feathers in great sharpness. You have an interesting collection of different kinds of birds in your gallery. Some of them I have never seen before. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards.
Anna

Hi Fikret,
Outstanding shot of this beautiful Rupell's Warbler with immaculate sharpness and details on its plumage. Superb lighting, exposure and colours and you have captured a fabulous pose here. Great DOF isolates it beautifully from the darkish BG and I like your chosen POV to portray it. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hello Fikret,
The Rüppell's Warbler is a species that I have tried to photograph with little success so far.
This is a great capture in a fine pose and composition on the lichen-covered branch taken from a good POV.
Thanks for sharing this delight,
Ivan
