[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
After a long time, I return to my main subject and big love, bats.
Many people hate or afraid of bats. Essentially, they are very useful animals ecologically. Today, we know about 1200 species of bats (order Chiroptera). They mostly feed on insects, especially harmful ones, e.g. mosquitos, moths and others. Some of them are frugivourus, less carnivourous (fishes, frogs, scorpion, rarely small birds and mice etc.). Only three species from Neotropical Regions, namely Central and Southern America, prefers blood, but mainly tapirs, equids and some large birds etc.
Interestingly, there is no vampir story in Amazon, such a false stories are commonly belived in Europe, especially the Carpathian Basin. Their origins dont come from bats, but from Abraham "Bram" STOKER's "Dracula" novel in 1897 and main idea from
Vlad III "Dracula" ("Kazıklı Voyvoda" in Ottoman's Archive) who live in 15th centuary and killed 20,000 to 40,000 European civilians and more than 100,000 Turkish Muslims (more information can be found in Wikipedia or historical sources).
As a result, people wrongly thinks that all bats haematophagus (blood-eaters). This is partially true only for fallowing species of the family Phyllostomidae;
-Desmodus rotundus,
-Diaemus youngi,
-Diphylla ecaudata.
but many animals such as mosquitos, ticks like blood. However, there is no story about them:)
Main reason of these bats are haematophagous, their teeth formula is 20, 22 and 24. Normally others bats have about 34, 36, 38 teeth totally.

Finally, today's bat Myotis (Myotis) emarginatus (E.Geoffroy, 1806) - Kirpikli Yarasa [TR], Geoffroy's Bat [EN] with first photograph on TN. Whereas, it is not very rare; it is distributed from South and Central Europe and North Africa to Turkish Western and Southern coastal regions and Turkistan of Central Asia. The populations of Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Central Asia are usually isolated. Recently, I found firstly this species north-east corner of Turkiye.
Adults have reddish fur, subadults have darker fur. This species can be also identified by margin of ears.
The photograph was taken by old Olimpus Camedia and the animal from Yalandünya Mağarası [Cave], Eski Yörük Köyü (Mersin Prov.: Aydıncık District) on July 21, 2002.
Additional information can be found on Myotis emarginatus under my webs and also fallowing two papers;

Hi Ahmet

Its also great to see a bat shot on TN, not too many make here, they are a difficult taxon to find and shoot for most people.

You have done well here. Good sharpness and details. Nice pose and good note.

Chris

A very good portrait of this not so rare bat in high definition Ahmet, that grabbing hind foot is quite interesting my friend. I think you should try diffused and/or bounce flash illumination in such takes, that way you could prevent some harsh shadows from forming.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hello Ahmet,
I think Bats are fascinating and would happily see more of them here! You caught this one in an interesting pose. Good focus on the eye and fine natural colours. It seems to be clinging onto some fabric, is this in captivity? Interesting to read your note too!
Many thanks and regards, Ulla
