This is quite a large specimen of the "Giant Tun", Dolium (Tonna) galea, which measures 21 cms at its longest dimension and its diameter is 17 cms. This predatory mollusc is probably the largest shelled gastropod of the Mediterranean/Aegean seas (the Sea Hare, Aplysia depilans, is the largest gastropod inhabiting our seas -ca. 25 cm- or more, but it does not have an externally visible shell). They prefer deeper waters with sandy-muddy bottoms, some covered with the sea grass (Zostera nana, Posidonia oceanica), and generally predate on bivalves and echinoderms. They have a unique weapon to kill their prey, the anterior portion of the mantle forms a long and highly motile proboscis with a terminal suction cup and two jaw plates. It is capable of producing a secretion with 2% to 4% sulfuric acid in its two large buccopharyngeal glands, a unique occurrence in the entire animal kingdom! This corrosive secretion is injected into the wictim by means of the two jaw plates which have been modified into grooved hooks and the prey either becomes paralyzed or is killed. The snail is capable to rip large chunks out of the victim with its powerful "radula" (a tongue-like organ with rows of strong teeth which act as a rasp) and eats them. Because of the motile proboscis and the corrosive secretion, a large, live specimen should be handled carefully.
This specimen was collected live by an otter trawl from a sandy-muddy bottom 80 meters deep at Gerence Bay, western part of the Karaburun Peninsula, İzmir. The close-up was taken with the aid of a single diffused photoflood two meters to the left of the shell, and a contra placed white cardboard passive reflector at fifty centimeters to the right. A dark BG was chosen.

21x17cm??? Yes this is a real Goliat among Mediterranean shells dear Mehmet! I did not know that so huge molluscs occur in this region :)
Very nice picture and interesting note. As always I found something new for me in your presentation, and for that: MANY THANKS!!! :)
Best greetings,

Hello Mehmet,
This attractive shell is well portrayed stimulates me to read your note. The title already hints that this is large, but as large as 20cm is astounding for a Mediterranean shell! The colour is beautiful too, a delicate shade of violet pink.
The other astounding aspect is your description of its weapon: up to 4% sulphuric acid! We produce 2% hydrochloric in our stomachs but 4% H2SO4 is amazing! One wonders where the sulphur comes from: does it derive it from its prey?
Thanks for sharing this beauty, my friend and for the intriguing information to go with it!
Ivan

I am terribly fascinated by shells...they have such a spot in history and geology....and in legend as well...I am a water sign, which prolly makes not much difference, but aI am very much attracted to the sea. And the way in which you pose your shells is wonderful. Consistency! It is like scientific clockwork!

Hello Mehmet,
I never thought there were such giants in the Mediterranean! The shell is beautifully captured, very sharply and in fine light. The note about the inside sounds less 'beautiful'! It seems to have a similarity in its predatory behaviour pattern to some tropical molluscs. Many thanks for this interesting presentation!
Best wishes, Ulla

Salam Mehmet. Good show like a barrel. No wonder it is the largest. Thanks for sharing. Regards. Jusni

Selamlar Hocam,

Hi Mehmet.
Once more simply outstanding shot of the shell. First of all pictured specimen is amazing. However the shot cannot be better. Extreme details, great wide DOF and sharpness of all object, pleasant colours and superb light. Bravo. Well done.
Alexei.

Most of the ignormuses on TN like me borrow words from Wikipedia and other sites to write our notes, Dr. Atatur.
You are among a handful of them who write their own notes based on their in-depth knowledge about the subject they are interested in.
Your note very clearly shows you have a profound insight into the subject of sea-shells.
The picture of your shell today is very impressive not only on account of the size of the shell but also because of its beautiful presentation.
The POV shows the finesse of the groves on the subject -- be they small or big.
Thanks a lot for showing us this wonderful specimen and for the erudite note you have written for us.
Ram

Hello Mehmet,

Very nice presentation of this huge shell. Great POV, DOF, and focus. Not a very colourful shell but its shape is very beautiful.
Cheers,

Merhaba Mehmet, a beautifull shell and a superb addition to your wonderfull collection! you know so much about them the information you provide is very well written. Congrats! good level of photographic quality as always selamlar Necip.
