This beauty, my friends, is known as a Bittersweet Clam, Glycimeris bimaculata, well known from the Mediterranean-Aegean seas of moderately deeper waters, since they do not tolerate well intertidal conditions. The almost circular shell has a "taxodont" hinge, a curved row of similar teeth on each side of the umbo in each shell. Generally the roundish shell is so symmetrical (apart from the symmetry of the two shells to each other) that identifying the anterior part from the posterior end is quite difficult. In the live mollusc the foot protrudes from the front end and the double siphons (for respiration and feeding) from the back end. A distinct layer of periostracum is present on each shell, more prominent towards the edges, in the form of short, fine bristle rows of keratin. Inside of the shell is not nacreous, generally whitish with a large, brownish maculation (hence the specific name, bimaculata). Two well developed adductor muscle scars are evident near the anterior and posterior edges of each shell. This clam possess eyes usually located along the margin of the mantle, also have some light sensitive organs on the gills.
This fine specimen (diameter 7 cms) was collected by a beam trawl from a sandy bottom at a depth of 25 meters between Foça and Karaburun/İzmir. To faithfully reproduce the natural colors (here slightly emphasized by saturation), this macro shot was taken under available daylight with open shade conditions.

Bu kavkılar dostlarım, Glycimeris bimaculata'ya ait. Akdeniz ve Ege Denizi'nde sıkça rastlanan bu midyeler, gel-git zonu şartlarına pek uyumlu olmadıklarından daha derin suları tercih ederler. Neredeyse dairesel görünümlü olan kavkıları "taksodont" tipte bir menteşeye sahiptir, her kavkıda umbo'nun her iki yanında kavisli bir şekilde uzanan birbirine benzer diş sıraları yer alır. Genelde yuvarlağımsı kavkılar o kadar simetriktirler ki (iki kavkının birbirine olan simetrileri kastedilmiyor) midyenin önünü arkasından ayırmak son derecede güçtür. Canlı yumuşakçada ayak ön taraftan dışarı uzanırken solunum ve beslenmede işlevsel olan sifon çifti arka taraftan çıkar. Her kavkı üzerinde,ince kılsı uzantılardan oluşan sıralar şeklinde, kenarlara doğru daha belirgin, keratinden bir "periostrakum" katmanı bulunur. Sedef içermeyen kavkı içi genelde beyazımsıdır, büyükçe bir de kahverengi leke içerir ki tür adı bimaculata bu özelliği belirler. Her kavkının içinde, ön ve arka kenarları yakınında belirgin birer kapama kası izi bulunur. Bu midyede manto kenarları boyunca yer alan gözlerin yanında, solungaçlar üzerinde de bazı ışığa duyarlı organlar vardır.
7 cm çapındaki bu güzel örnek İzmir'de, Foça - Karaburun arasında 25 m derinlikteki kumluk zeminden bim trol aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Burada "doygunlaştırma" ile biraz abartılmış olan doğal renklerin doğru aktarılabilmesi için makro çekim, açık gölge şartlarındaki doğal gün ışığı aydınlatması altında gerçekleştirilmiştir.

Very nice arrangement of these two symmetrical shells and a fine capture in the ambient light, Mehmet.

I have never seen a shell with such spectacular colors. You captured these beautifully showing all the wonderful shadings. Very interesting notes.
