[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I was out of circulation for a few days, and would try to catch up with my comments and critiques on your past posts. And now my friends, as you can easily observe, not all the mollusc shells are beautiful, some are quite strange or plain ugly, a case in point is the present specimen, a rare denizen of the Mediterranean - Aegean seas. In fact maybe not so rare but whole shells are rarely seen, as they are quite brittle and break off easily. These gastropods belong to the family Vermetidae, or Worm Snails, which have extremely irregular, elongated tubular shells generally moulded or cemented to a suitable hard substratum, sometimes sunken into sandy-muddy bottoms. However the apertural part of the shell is usually free, with the opening directed upward. Only the juvenile shell is reminiscent of the usual snail form. With the progressive degeneration of the no longer useful foot, they seem more to resemble the tube-dwelling polychaete annelids (distant relatives of earthworms) than true snails. The shells are extremely variable, so it is not easy to make a positive ID. I tentatively place this specimen within Vermetus gigas, the Giant Worm Shell, more usually the denizen of the Atlantic, but also may be seen in the Medit-Aegean system. Whitish to grayish rough shell often has a calcified crust and a longitudinal slit (seen on the lower two of the four whorls at right). The sedentary habits of these snails has resulted in a great change in the mode of feeding. They are "mucociliary" feeders, the pedal gland discharges mucous strings forming a net, which is used to trap microscopic creatures and organic detritic substances. Periodically the vermetid grasps such a mucous string with its radula (a tongue-like organ with teeth) and pulls it into its mouth.
This specimen, the long dimension of which is nearly 10 cms, was collected while snorkelling from an 8 m. deep sandy-muddy bottom offshore of Eski Foça, İzmir, but it was empty when found, probably drifted there with strong bottom eddies from elsewhere in the vicinity. A diffused photospot was used at 2 m.s to the right of the specimen, with a contra placed (at 30 cms) white cardboard passive reflector to take this macro-photo, as usual over a dark BG.

Hi Mehmet

Great shot of this amazing shell. Good exposure and detail.

Hallo Mehmet
Although you titled this one "The ugly one" I really like this image. It reminds me of a Ram's horn or Shofar, a musical instrument used for religious purposes. I have never seen a spiralled shell like this and it is very interesting but also very fragile looking. Especially in the bend it looks very soft and brittle. Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Hi Mehmet.
Saw Your photo yesterday. But I really wanted to konw what is all about, and read Your note too. So here is it.
Never seen a shell like this one before, it is easy to break? You have to handled with care any way. I like it.
Interesting note Professor.

Hello Mehmet!
This is a fantastic documentary picture of "house" of criture which is so rarely presented on TN that I can say only one thing - great contribution to diversity of invertebrates in TN's gallery!
Very good sharpness, light and composition! Bravo!!!
Yours,
Radomir

hocam merhaba

Hi Mehmet,

A wonderful macro of this amazing looking shell. I've never seen anything like this. The details are superb and it shows off so well against the dark background. It is surprising that this is so complete. Fascinating!

Hello Mehmet, Welcome back and i am sure you will now catchup. The shot is perfect from the view and also the nicely presented. Ganesh

I tend to disagree with you, Mehemet.
Even this curly shell has its beauty of form.
In fact, it evokes in my mind the shape of the snail that must have resided inside it.
The rear portion looking like a curled-up tail grabs my attention.
This one does look fragile though.
Well captured specimen.
Thanks and hope you are back to your erudite reaction to other people's work on a regular basis.

Hi Mehmet,

Over the months you have presented us with some simply beautiful and wonderful shells, (what went wrong) ;) I have to agree with the title this is one ugly looking mollusc, having said that as always you present it beautifully and turn it into a wonderful piece of sculpture, well light and well framed,

Cheers Rick :)

Hi Mehmet,
Wonderful shot of this ugly looking Worm Snail. Very interesting formation and patterns and you have handled it well considering the brittleness. Superb lighting again and the black BG works wonders here. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Merhaba Hocam,
A wonderful shot, as usual. Also the shell is very interesting. It must be hard to get the whole shell like this, as you mentioned in your note. Thank you for sharing and for useful notes.

Naşit

Merhaba Mehmet, well returned with us, it's really a very strange shell, I never see before, beutiful macro with great details and splendid sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Spettacolare macro, le tue immagini sono una ricerca ad altissimi livelli di forme, colori, luci, e riesci sempre a presentarci dei piccoli capolavori esaltando al massimo le bellezze che il grande "architetto" Natura ci regala. Splendido lavoro. Grazie e complimenti. Ciao Maurizio

Hello Mehmet,
A very interesting posting backed by an informative note. The image is beautifully composed and presented to show the shell of this worm snail sharply and from an excellent POV. The uppermost part of the shell seems to have the cases of tubeworms stuck to it, or are they small species of worm snails?
Fascinating, if not beautiful and thanks for sharing this.
Best wishes, my friend,
Ivan
