Dostlarim,
My previous post was about the test of a beautiful Mediterranean urchin, an echinoderm, the original inhabitant of which was alive only a few years ago. My present posting is a macro shot of another echinoderm's, probably another urchin's test, but its original inhabitant was alive more than sixtyfive to seventy million years ago! For this is the fossilized remains of a long extinct echinoderm with no similar forms or relatives living today. It also resembles a primitive sea star with very short arms, but even after these millions of years, it is still possible to discern some minute perforations (left of the image center) for the tube feet; since in recent sea stars no tube feet are present on the dorsal or aboral side of the animal, but they are quite evident on the living sea urchins, I think this is the fossilized test of a long gone sea urchin. Any further identification is outside of my capabilities.
This calcified fossil was found among Cretaceous strata of limestones of the Central Anatolian Plateau, the region was below the shallow waters of the ancient Tethys Sea 70-80 million years ago, a remnant of which is the Mediterranean Sea.
Thanks to a generous help and valuable pointers from our mutual friend, Selen EDIGER, I was able to determine the generic name of this fossil as Clypeaster, tentatively the full name might be C. partschii, an "irregular" sea urchin, its age may extend from late Cretaceous to early Miocene (65-25 million years).
This macro photo was taken under the diffused light of a small photospot on the right, with the help of a contra placed crinkled aluminum folio passive reflector on the left, over the usual dark BG.

Hi Mehmet,

What an amazing find, the detail in the patterns in this a truly stunning, let a lone its survived a massive sixty-five to seventy million years. Really wonderful work and beautifully presented with a very interesting note, t.f.s

All the best, cheers Rick :)

Hello Mehmet,
I've just been looking through some of your photos of seashells and am most impressed with the skill with which you manage to capture them with very special light.
Shells and fossils are of great interest to me too as I have been a caver for over three decades.
I see quite a lot o sea star fossils similar to this one in the limestone cliffs near Punakaiki,a little way up the coast from here.
I also found This strange fossil in a rock in a limestone streambed near Punakaiki.
What do you think it is?
I thought you might also enjoy This image, also taken on a beach near there.
(I have one or two other seashore related photos I'd like to ask you about, but I'll save those for later)
Cheers
Steve

Hi Mehmet,
A nice capture of this fossilized urchin. A nice composition to present it with sharp details. And lastly very informative notes. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hello Mehmet,
At first view I though that this is skeleton of some species present in the wild, but soon after I found in your note that this is a fossil! It reminds me of of my trip when I was a student and we were in Swietokrzyskie Mts. just to look for fossils of Echinodermata. We found some really nice exemplares (actually they are deposited in the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw :>). So first of all: thank you very much for bringing nice moments from the past :)
According to the photo I have to say that it is really nice: sharp, detailed, with good contrast and of course interesting note.
Best regards and thank you for showing this interesting object!
Friendly yours,
Radomir

Merhaba Mehmet,
Interesting to see a fossil of 70m yr-old Echinoderm's test portayed with excellent lighting and sharpness. Doesn't look like it had spines as such but maybe other structures instead.
One could both look and speculate, but here I mostly look!
Thanks for that!
Best regards, my friend,
Ivan

Hi Mehmet,
you would love the coast where i live, it is covered in fossils, mostly ammonites but sometimes something a bit more interesting. . Perhaps i will try to capture one for you if i can find a good one.
This is a very good specimen, with fine detail and as always excellent lighting - great work.

Hi Mehmet,
You show us something extraordinary here and the fossil looks so beautiful in shape and design. Seems like a highly decorative English Hat. Very neat and sharp image with perfect use of flash light. The black BG which is your forte works well here too. Excellent POV and composition. Kudos.

Mehmet, the mind boggles by the mere look of this fossilized shell that nurtured life inside it millions of years ago. This truly must be a highly prized item in your collection. The leaf-like patterns on it are very well preserved and beautiful to look at.
Thanks a lot for sharing the image of this precious piece which you have photographed very well.
Best regards.
Ram

Hi Mehmet. This looks strange but again you have captured in excellent sharpness here. The trimming in the texture looks like gold and well done again for the new species. Best regards. Jusni
