Dear Friends,
I'm really sorry for being so late in adding my notes to my present post, but somehow I could not connect to TN or internet today, up to now.
My present post concerns one of the most beautiful bivalves of the Atlanto-Mediterranean region, the Heart Cockle or Glossus humanus, formerly known as Isocardia cor, a denizen of deeper waters from 50 to 150 or more meters, preferring soft muddy bottoms, which characteristic is evident from its weak foot musculature, also being a typical suspension feeder. The shell valves are strongly symmetrical to each other, but the valve itself does not display a symmetry, being quite different in this characteristic from the Bittersweet Clam, Glycimeris bimaculata, in a shell of which my heart cockle is now sitting (a subject of one of my previous posts, you may remember inside of that shell was mentioned as being white with a large brownish-purplish maculation, partly visible here). The relatively thin (and to a degree, fragile) shell of the heart cockle is markedly globular, so it does not sink easily into the soft mud, the spirally enrolled "umboes" are directed anteriorly, so when viewed from the anterior it has a strong resemblance to the mammalian heart. Covering the external surface of the shell is a reddish brown periostracum, which, except at the antero-ventral of the umboes, is produced into numerous radiating rows of minute bristle-like projections (not so evident on this rather "weathered" specimen). Being a mud dweller, the shell is thin, extremely fragile in smaller specimens. Internally, the valves have a smooth porcellaneous appearance, exhibiting a largish posterior adductor muscle scar and a smaller anterior one.
This rare specimen (diameter 6 cms) was collected by an otter trawl at Gerence Bay of Karaburun Peninsula/İzmir, from a depth of 80 meters, a muddy bottom. The photograph was taken under unilateral available daylight with the help of a white passive reflector, over a dark BG.

Dear Mehmet,

I think this has to be the best image yet, what a wonderful composition, and an amazing creation of nature, beautiful colours, stunning detail, and as always presented beautifully. A real pleasure to look at my friend, all the best,

Cheers Rick :)

Hocam merhabalar,

Hello Mehmet,
Your photography always presents a delightful combination of esthetics and science and the arrangement of this Heart Cockle on the Bittersweet Clam shell demonstrates this superbly.
This could easily be an installation at an art gallery and at the same time a fine display of how the two species of molluscs differ visually and biologically. The expert photography and excellent informative note, however gives it all on a plate without the TN viewer having to bother to travel to a museum or art gallery and I thank you for that my friend!
Best wishes, Ivan

I miss some photos from You, but I have been working in the ranch far away from the city, and I dont have internet there.
Lovly photo of this two shells, and as usual in You, very interesting notes.

Merhaba Mehmet!
As I see you just came back, but because of any new pictures (as for now) I just wanted to say "hello" and to comment an older one :)
The composition of this image is not natural of course, but I like a lot your idea for the picture. Very nice one, really!
Note is as always very informative :)
