Darevskia valentini (Valentin’s Rock Lizard) [in Turk. Valentin Kaya Kertenkelesi] (Bipedalism in a Male) #3

Dear Friends, I have started to present Valentin’s Rock Lizard as a 1st in TN from Bolkar Mt. (Ulukışla, Niğde Province) for two days. I uploaded three captures (one of these as being in WS) of a handsome male from the same location (a general appearance, his portrait and usual posture on a rock) to show the typical male pattern, its head scallation and its usual posture on a rock. Here's another three shots (two of these in WS) of the same lizard but this time are related with a different subject: on “its unusual behaviour” on a rock. To take these captures I had to wait aprox. 2 hours without making any movements. But I am sure that he noticed me! Interestingly, this guy showed “bipedality” (see also WS1 and WS2) like a ground squirel which are sympatric in the same place. They can be taught to do tricks, and are said to be intelligent in their ability to learn behaviours.

In this way, I want to mention on the "Bipedalism": a form of terrestrial locomotion where an organism moves by means of its two rear limbs. An animal that usually moves in a bipedal manner is known as a biped (meaning "two feet" (in Lat. bi = two + ped = foot). Types of bipedal movement include standing, walking, running, or jumping/hopping, on two appendages (typically legs). In the Triassic period some groups of archosaurs (a group that includes the ancestors of crocodiles) developed bipedalism; among their descendants the dinosaurs all the early forms and many later groups were habitual or exclusive bipeds; the birds descended from one group of exclusively bipedal dinosaurs. A larger number of modern species are capable of bipedal movement for a short time in exceptional circumstances. Several crocodile species and lizard species move bipedally when they are in an extreme hurry, usually to escape from threats; and some lizards, inclusing the Jesus or Basilisk lizard, even run bipedally on water. Many animals rear up on their hind legs while fighting. A few animals commonly stand on their hind legs, in order to reach food or to “keep watch” , but do not move bipedally. In this case which I observed and photographed we can assume that the Valentine Rock Lizard uses the bipedalism to “keep watch” its environment :-).

Today, I would like dedicate these photos to one of my beloved and heartfelt friend, Jane Magen (jaycee) from USA since she loves very much the hands and foots :-) of these beauties! :p. Thank you Jane for your all kind comments and your valuable contributions to TN.

Hoping that you like these shots!

Cheers,

Bayram

Ho Bayram,
İnsan gibi davranmaya çalışan bu maskarayı nereden buldun ya Hu? Laf aramızda WS'a koyduğun resimler asıl post'takinden çok daha teknik ve güzel, Jane de bunları daha çok beğenecek, eminim.
Mehmet

Hi Bayram,
Interesting comp, POV, and pose..The reach out and touch someone theme works for me. Good detail, color, and exposure also.
Excellent notes/links on this "bipedaling" wonder of nature :)
Well done & TFS!
Howard

Merhaba Hocam,

Hello Bayram,
A fine capture of Valentine's Rock Lizard from another POV. that shows his front feet to function as 'hands' (are they prehensile?) while he is in a bipedal stance. Great focusing on the 'hand' and the head and a fine composition.
TFS this excellent image, a fine tribute to our TN friend, Jane,
Best wishes, Ivan

Hello Bayram,

Excellent posture of this lizard. The focus is very good on the hand. It's a pity that you don't have chosen a higher DOF. Excellent note as usual. Good natural colours. The two picture in the WS are superb.
Cheers,
Mariki
