Anchusa sp.

Bugloss [EN] / Sığırdili [TR]

Hi,
Here is another photo from my hiking trip to Ayaş. This flower was near a mulberry orchard, where we took a break :)

It is like Anchusa officinalis but plant was not as much hairy. Maybe it belongs to a different subspecies.

The arrangement of the flowers is called helicoid cyme, an inflorescence often seen in members of the borage family. It is also proportionate to the golden spiral in architecture and photography.

The Turkish name Sığırdili means Cow's Tongue probably because of the hairy leaves.

Thanks
Ali

Hi Ali!

You present us a delightful and well coloured flower picture. It's a great season right now for that kind of pictures and you took great advantage of this. I like the simple and classic, yet pleasant composition very much.

Kind regards

Markus

Hi Ali,
The name Bugloss threw me for a minute there.
I used to grow Vipers Bugloss which is an Echium sp. and I have grown Anchusa in my flower gardens here in New Zealand also, calling it Cape Forget Me Not.
After reading a book on herbalism I see that Bugloss was a name applied to both species, but that Anchusa was most likely the one used in herbal preparations it refers to.
A very interesting post.
Thank you.
Cheers
Steve

Hello Ali,
