[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Anax parthenope parthenope (Sélys, 1839) - Lesser Emperor [EN] is one of large dragonflies, with 70-71 mm in lenght, an abdomen of 46-53 mm, a fore wingspan of 100 mm. But it is slightly smaller than A. imperator. Eyes are green and thorax is brown and lacks black markings on the thorax, common to most of species of the family AESHNIDAE (ODONATA: ANISOPTERA). Abdomen is greenish-brown and with a blue band at the top of abdomen and extends down both side of this part.
It widely ranges in Southern Europe. However, its distribution arrives from North Africa, Central and Eastern Europe throughout Turkiye to Turkestan [Central Asia]. In Turkiye, it occurs mainly in southern parts and also less in other regions of the country.
It is active from late March to early December and it prefers standing, often larger water. Adult males have a territorium.

The shot was taken by my old camera Canon Rebel XTi (EOS 400D) in hand and in Akkaya Damlake which is one of ordinary bird paradiseas in Turkiye. And upto now, I have reported more than 20 species of Odonata addition to 159 bird and 25 mammal species and others. So, I prepared a chechlist for Turkish dragonflies and damselflies and you can see it, clicking the link. I know that focus not good for me, but I prefer to indroduce this species in second time on TN (after Peter Hoppenbrouwers (upupa67)'s). Another shot of this species from same place can be seen in Workshop.

iyi geceler.

Very well seen and captured, my dearest brother Ahmet!
I'm sorry for being so irregular!
Cheers!

Wow, this is a truly wonderful capture of a dragonfly in flight, Ahmet.
You nailed the fellow in sharp focus at 1/500 and also got the natural colour tones right.
Well done and TFS.

Hello Ahmet!

Hi Ahmet,
I like your flying dragon fly. We can see that the fore- and hind wings beat in alternance. This fact was considered by my teacher forty years ago as a primitive trait in contrast to the coupled fore- and hind wing arrangement in, say, lepidopterans or hymenopterans. But when one watches and shoots dragon flies, it becomes clear what great acrobats they are. The trait might be geologically old but certainly it is well adapted to the lifestile of the dragon flies. I particularly want to thank you for the detailed and scientific note, so useful and entertaining. Your idea of picturing the species that inhabit Turkey is also excellent.
My best regards to you
Dietrich

Hello Ahmet,

Very nice in-flight capture of this dragonfly. Very good focus. Beautiful detail. Very good natural colours.
Cheers,
Mariki

Maybe not perfect, but still a very good and difficult to get in-flight capture of a d.fly Ahmet, in fine focus and accurate colour rendering. TFS this beautiful image my friend.
Mehmet
P.s.: just noticed the WS and made a WS on it! Hope you like it...

Hi Ahmet.
This is a dream of every photographer and you have realized it perfectly. Superb in-flight picture of a wonderful dragonfly. Timing, DOF, details and colours are great as well as the composition of the shot. WS are so attractive as original picture. My compliments and best regards.
Alexei.

Merhaba Ahmet, splendid dragonfly in fantastic flying action, beautiful colors, great focus with lovely blurry BG, fine details and superb sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Salam Ahmet. The capture of this d-fly in flight is amazing enough as I found it difficult to get it framed. The sharpness of the body and head is flawless with good flipping of the wings. Incredible macro and thanks so much for sharing. Regards. Jusni
