Sympetrum fonscolombii (Red-veined Darter) (Love Wheel)

Dear friends, another love wheel position of the Red-veined darters but bit closer in. Yesterday our friend Ömer Sözer (Eng55) gived me a suggestion on a title of the dragonflies’ “love wheel position” that in Turkish we can use to show respect to someone on making something which requested gladly. In this case, we say “Başımın üstünde yerin var”, i.e.in Eng. I can translate it as: “Come on! You have a special place on my head!”:) -(that in this case the female could be say this phrase to her mate:)-. This is funny indeed. Thus i used this for today’s posting:)
Hope you can like this title and capture too:)

TFL! Have a nice weekend all!
Cheers,

Bayram

Ps. By the way, i wish to give you a news from D-fly world in here. They are still active and today i observed at least 4 pair in love wheel position:)

*****************************

Breeding in D-flies: In breeding period, the first step is the capture of a female by a male. Males typically grab females by the thorax in flight with their legs, then shift them around so the male's terminal abdominal appendages are holding the female by the head in dragonflies or behind the head (the prothorax) in damselflies. Both insects are facing the same direction, the female behind and below the male. The pair, said to be "in tandem", will continue to fly this way until actual fertilization takes place. Many species will fly to a perch for the next step, and others will continue in flight.
In order to transfer the sperm from the male to the female, whether perched or in flight, the female will curl the tip of her abdomen up to meet the accessory genitalia of the male. The pair is now in “wheel position, and females often reach up with their legs to grasp the male's abdomen. In the more flexible damselflies, the wheel position may be likened to the shape of a heart.

After several mating sessions many males bear marks on their abdomen near segment 7, where the females have been holding on. Several important steps are now taken. Using a set of paddlelike structures unique to odonates and some spiders, the male literally "scoops" away sperm left over from previous matings by this female. After that, the male deposits his sperm into the female. This process can take from just a minute or so up to an hour or more in some species. In perched species, observers can see visible pumping as this process is concluded. The female receives enough sperm in anyone mating session to fertilize all her eggs during her adult life, but if she gets captured by another male the whole process will occur again. During both the tandem and wheel positions other males often try to snare the female for their own breeding attempt.

Hi Brother Bayram,

This super close-up is amazing. I have never seen a Darter's face so clearly. From her expression she seems to be enjoying herself :-)
The details are fantastic. The colors from the background make the picture very beautiful.

Hi Bayram

To you I also say, "Başımın üstünde yerin var", but I just don't know how to change the Turkish word for "head" with "heart". Although the saying is probably true for both places - my head and my heart.

On our wedding day, Anna and I received a card from one of our friends, stating: "Loot, don't let anybody ever sit on your head. It is your wife's place". It seems to be quite appropriate for these Dragon flies as well. The way this female hangs on to the tail end of her partner it seems like she's clinging on for dear life and doesn't want the other one to ever release his head grip.

A brilliant capture with amazing details, a wonderful POV, lovely natural colours, a complimentary OOF BG and a great macro composition.

Well done MF and TFS.
Regards
Loot

PS. More importantly; I want to thank you for your wonderful friendship and all that you have meant for me this past 2008. Hello Bayram,

Wow! What an impressive close-up of this 2 dragonflies in tandem! We can see here how firmly the male grasp the head of the female. It is not easy to be a female Odonate because sometimes the males are very rude and can hurt severely the female. Nice details and good pov with a perfect pov.

Very well done and TFS!

Michel

Hello Bayram

Hi again Bayram,
This is a macro of top quality. You are able to see pairs of them....Wow...i have n'ver come across even a single pair of the species in this position.I like this intimate composition's PoV and DoF. The title that is so apt for the scene depicted. The sharpness and details revealed is simply amazing. The colours on the body of your subject itself is a good mix and makes the composition more
vibrant.
