Eutolmus rufibarbis, a robber fly.

Robber flies are not to be trifled with. Capable of immobilizing bees, wasps and other insects larger than itself, robberflies catch their prey in mid air. As with other aerial predators, robberflies have excellent vision, characterized by two conspicuous compound eyes.

The mouthparts of this family have been modified to a stabbing proboscis. Flies were revered by the ancient Egyptians who awarded a military honor in the form of a golden fly pendant.

P.S. In the British Isles this is a very rare and endangered species.

...and very nasty they are too. It's a very nice shot, maybe a weeny bit soft but considering you don't have a macro lens it's pretty darn good. About the ID, I'm not suggesting you are incorrect but there are 27 Bristish species and if you have an ID guide I'd like to know where you got it from...I want one!

Nice work Stephen.

very nice shot Stephen,
I like the good work here, the composing shot is good, well taken, very nice in pov and a very good dof, very good job,
gr. Jaap

This looks like a mosquito, tempting to squash the robber.... but like you said rare and endangered, so we must appreciate what we have. Really great note, very interesting info. Well done.

I like this rogue. Detailed and sharp, good POV and composition. Rocky BG is also very suitable for this shot.

This is a very nice macro Stephen! The details on the head (especially on the eyes) are amazing!! Good POV, well composed and great colors. Too bad the DOF is a little too shallow too get the behind in focus. It's a great picture though. Well done & TFS!

Regards,
Pieter

Hi Stephen, Nice Point of view and composition. A bit soft focussed but details are clear enough.
Thank you for sharing.

Great macro Stephen! I like the comp. and POV most here..Seems we both posted the same robber - he gets around! I had other opportunities to shoot mine on something other than the stick but none came out well..
Well done!

Very interesting subject, Steve.

The compo and exposure works. The focus a bit soft though, but no tdistracting. Very well done.
