[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
While wandering around the ancient ruins of Ephesus, I came across this Little Owl (Athene noctua) sitting on top of a Greeko-Roman marble column on Harbour (Arcadian) Street. At the time I only had my Cannon S3 at hand, and the shot was taken at full 12 X zoom plus 2 X digital enhancememnt giving an equivalent of 800mm; so the quality is not good. But how could I resist this classic image and see what the camera could produce.
The result is this little owl sitting on top of a 2,500 year old relic and I love it; it is one of my favourite memories from two fantastic weeks in southwestern Turkey. As I say above, the quality is not good, but the setting is unique and I’m happy with the result. Cropped slighly from the orginal and levels adjust in Photoshop where it was also slightly sharpened.

The Little Owl is resident through temperate Europe, Asia and northern Africa. It is one of the smallest owl species, only 23 –27 cm in height. They prey on insects, lizards, small mammals and birds. As can be seen here, they are partially diurnal especially in the cooler months of the year.

Thanks for looking

Hi Chris!

Very good work at ancient site :-) I like composition very much - this owl is in perfect place. Like ancient Greek representation of Athena - daughter of Zeus. As for 800mm quality IS very good :-)
