Macroglossum stellatarum (Hummingbird Hawkmoth) [in Turk. Nektar Güvesi, Atmaca Güvesi]

Dear friends, as I mentioned yesterday we visited Burdur province too. While we were looking for herptiles in an area covered with Echinops sp.. (Thistle) I saw so many beauties of this hawkmoth feeding with nectars.

And today, I would like dedicate this photo to one of my beloved friends and great nature photographer, Hayati Keser (Hay_kes).

TFL and cheers,

*****************************

Macroglossum stellatarum Hummingbird Hawkmoth is a species of hawk moth with a long proboscis, and regularly hovers, making an audible humming noise. These two features make it look remarkably like a hummingbird when it feeds on flowers. It flies during the day, especially in bright sunshine, but also at dusk, dawn, and even in the rain, which is unusual for even diurnal hawkmoths. It is distributed throughout the northern Old World from Portugal to Japan, but is resident only in warmer climates (Portugal, Spain, Germany, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, North Africa, and points east), in two or more broods. Larva is green or brown and feeds on bedstraws. It is strongly migratory and can be found virtually anywhere in the hemisphere in the summer. However it rarely survives the winter in northern latitudes (e.g. north of the Alps in Europe, north of the Caucasus in Russia, etc.). Hibernates as an adult, but rarely survives the winter north of the Alps.

This is a devil of a Moth to shoot, but all of us fall for it, Prof Bayram.
Ivan did a good job of it recently, but you have done even better.
The subject is frozen pretty well at 1/1000.
I too tried my hand at it once, but with mild results.
Thanks and regards.
Ram

Hi LBB,

I would love to see a Hawk Moth one day!!! I know I could never get a shot like this. What great timing (and I imagine patience) to freeze the action so well. A perfect capture of a great moment. Nice colors and amazing details - the eye and proboscis are both fantastic.

I have nothing to say here, as usual, bro, but that this is one of the best macros I've seen till date.
