Glossy Ibis are the size of small herons but are easily identified by their all-dark plumage, long, down-curved, curlew-like bills and a neck which is held outstretched in flight and is so slender it looks distinctly fragile. At close range you can see the iridescent green, maroon and brown sheen which gives the bird its name. They are sociable birds, often feeding in small parties or flying over in a trailing line or in 'V' formation.

Breeds and winters in shallow freshwater lakes and marshes.

Rare vagrant to the UK. Two birds were resident in Kent during the 1980's, but these are no longer present. There have been 63 records in Britain and Ireland between 1958-1995.


Scarce in western Europe, although it is regularly seen on the Camargue (France) and at most of the significant coastal wetlands in Spain but much more numerous in eastern Europe. Unmissable on the Danube Delta (Romania). Other good spots include lakes Kerkini and Mitrikou (Greece) and lakes such as Civril and Apolyont as well as the Gulluk and Efes Marshes in Turkey.

The European population is estimated at between 7,000-9,000 pairs. Russian population 6500-8000 Turkish population 500-1400
