Dendrocopos major (=Dendrocopus major) (Great Spotted Woodpecker) [in Turk. Orman Agaçkakanı] (Adult Female)

I captured this pretty and noisy woodpecker in Sarıkamış (Kars) from my car’s window. I think this is the first observation on the presence of the species in this province. I also attached a WS showing its dorsal body colouration too.

TFL and Have a nice new week!
Cheers,

*****************************

This beautiful woodpecker is distributed throughout Europe and northern Asia, and usually resident year-round except in the colder parts of its range. Like all woodpeckers it has the tail feathers pointed and rigid at the tip to aid in climbing, and a strong chisellike bill with which they are able to drill holes in the bark and wood of trees in search of insect larv[ae] upon which most of the species feed.

The great spotted woodpecker is sometimes called the 'Pied woodpecker' because of its black and white colouring. Both the male and female birds have a vivid red patch under the tail, but only the males have a red patch at the back of the neck. Juvenile birds have a red patch on top of their heads. In late winter and early spring they are very audible, as the males perform their annual territorial drumming solo. This is to tell other males to keep out of their patch of the woods.

They do this by striking their beak against a dead branch 10 to 15 times in under a second. Because this is done high in the tree tops, it produces a resonating drum sound, which echoes all around the woodland. The nest is made by chiseling out a hole in a tree trunk with its beak. It's strengthened skull help to cushion the blows. The female lays up to seven eggs, which are all white in colour.

Hello Bayram,
Yes car windows can be useful hides at time and you have taken a fine capture of this female D. major, a relatively rare species in Turkey.
The action of her shaking herself is well caught with fine sharpness and exposure and set in a fine composition.
Thanks Dostum and have a good week,
Cheers,
Ivan

I am not familiar with this camera...I went right away after seeing teh image to get a notion what you took it with. It reminds me of an old Leica film.....a certain type of colour which only Leicas lens could capture 50 years ago...and am amazed to see a Sigma on the 5000...Fantastic!

Hi Bayram

Magnificent shot! Although these birds are not uncommon in the UK they are very elusive - I hear more often than see them. So to see AND get such a remarkable capture is quite an achievement!

Best wishes
