*****************************

The Rose-ringed Parakeet, also known as the Ringnecked Parakeet, is a gregarious tropical parakeet species that is popular as a pet. Its scientific name commemorates the Austrian naturalist Wilhelm Heinrich Kramer.

This non-migrating species is one of few parrot species that have successfully adapted to living in 'disturbed habitats', and in that way withstood the onslaught of urbanisation and deforestation. In the wild, this is a noisy species with an unmistakable squawking call.
As is the case with all Psittacula (Afro-Asian Ringnecked Parakeet) species, the Rose-ringed Parakeet is sexually dimorphic. The adult male sports a black neck-ring and pink nape-band while the hen and immature birds of both sexes either show no neck rings, or display shadow-like pale to dark grey neck-rings and light (lighter coloured than surroundings) nape-bands.
Four subspecies are recognized, though they do not differ much:

• African subspecies:
1. (P. krameri krameri): African-ringnecked (aka ARN) Parakeet : West Africa in Guinea, Senegal and southern Mauritania, east to Western Uganda, Eastern South Africa, and Southern Sudan.
2. (P. krameri parvirostris): Abyssinian-ringnecked (aka Aby-RN) Parakeet : Northwest Somalia, west across northern Ethiopia to Sennar district, Sudan.
• Asian subspecies:
1. (P. krameri manillensis): Indian-ringnecked (aka IRN) Parakeet : Originates from the southern Indian subcontinent; and has feral and/or naturalized populations worldwide. In Australia, United States, and other western countries, it is often referred to as the Indian Ring-Necked Parakeet/Parrot.
2. (P. krameri borealis): boreal or Neumann's ringnecked (aka BRN) Parakeet :Bangladesh, northern India and Nepal to central Burma; introduced populations worldwide in localities.

Wild flocks also fly several miles to forage in farmlands and orchards causing extensive damage. They have been found to feed extensively on pigeon pea during winter in India. They also breed during winter unlike most other South Asian birds.

Rose-ringed Parakeets measure on average 40 cm (16 inches) long including the tail feathers. Its average single wing length is about 15–17.5 cm (6-7 inches). The tail accounts for a large portion of their total length. African ssp. are slender in bodies but usually display longer tail feathers (more so in mature male specimens) than Asian ssp. which are typically stockier in bodies. The former usually display darker (brownish-red) upper mandibles while the latter always display bright-red upper-mandibles.

The Rose-ringed Parakeet has established feral populations in India, a number of European cities, Turkey, South Africa and Japan. There are also apparently stable populations in the USA in Florida, California and Hawaii with a small but self-sustaining population in Tehran, Iran, mostly concentrated in the northern parts of city. They are also found almost throughout Israel.

Merhaba Bayram,

Another marvellous closeup shot from Rose-ringed Parakeet! This shot has a great position of the parakeet. The colors are very natural and the way it looks at something, is adorable. The sharpness and POV are wonderful, as always. The DOF is very nice too. The bird stands out well against the blurred greenish BG. Very well seen!

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

Hello Bayram,
I see these have also invaded Turkey! I hope they take in Sweden as well before long so that we in Scandinavia can enjoy the sight and screetches of the Ring-necked Parakeet as well!
In the meantime I can enjoy this fine capture of the female taken from a nice frontal POV with excellent sharpness and lighting against a suitable OOF natural BG. the pose and composition are great too!
Thanks MF and have a good weekend,
Ivan

Dostum merhaba,

Hi Bayram,

What a classic capture of this lovely parakeet! It was just posing for this snap! Very well done. Around my house I see lot of Asian parakeets but are too shy and too fast for me to catch on camera. You did a lovely work of catching this one in a splendid pose. Very well done.

TFS,
Kedar

Hi Barea,

This bird looks familiar, but I don't remember where I've seen it. :) Seriously: even better than the other shot (although I liked that one, too), excellent composition and sharpness on the focused area, wonderful blur in the background. Professional looking shot. Bravo.

So they also live in The Netherlands... Nature always causes surprises if You're a good man... :)
Tfs, regards, László (just answering to You another forum discussion, within minutes)

Hallo Bayram
Now is this not a beauty! I like the very close approach showing the bright colours and detail of the plumage wonderfully. It looks like a very friendly bird and the expression caught in the eye is rather mischievous and up and about. I like the almost upside down pose, once more bringing out the playful character I see looking at this lovely Parakeet. It was a great pleasure to stop by such a delightful image, not known to be associated by Prof Gocmen, or at least not that I know of. Thanks for sharing. Best regards.
Anna
ps. Like always your information that accompanied your image is outstanding and very interesting.

Salam Bayram,

Another great capture of this Feral Parakeet with lovely pose, brilliant colors, sharpness & details. Nicely done with care & TFS.
