Crocothemis erythraea (Broad Scarlet or Scarlet Darter) (Male)

I would like to dedicate today's posting to Özgür ERİZ (anemone) who became a member of TN a few days ago and I saw he in our university’s Botany Garden while photographing a scarlet darter:). He was also my undergraduate student but now he selected Botany Section for completing his education. However, I noticed that he is also interesting with b-flies and d-flies as well as photography. This tendency is realy nice since insects, especially b-flies shows so many interactions with plants and I am sure this perspective will improve his skills on botany. This one is for you Özgür and “warm welcome!” to great TN family!

TFL and Have a nice Saturday!!
Cheers,

*****************************

In Crocothemis erythraea, body is yellow or brown at first, becoming red with age: especially vivid in male. Young males and females appear very different from the all-red mature males. They are brown-yellow, with pale stripes on the 'shoulders' and across the 'back' (beetween wings), and often very slight blackish lines on abdomen. Costa and radius red: other veins black. Patch on hind wing orange or red in male, yellow in female. It likes to perch on bare twig or reed. It prefers still waters, including Mediterranean rice fields. It is mainly an African species that extends into adjacent Eurasia and found in Southern parts, occasionally central Europe. It is common and widespread in the whole of Africa, western Asia and the south of our area, but still quite local away from the Mediterranean, gradually expanding northwards. Two generations per year in southernmost areas. Total length changes between 36 and 45mm, Abdomen length is 18-33mm. At all ages the wings are clear, with a larger amber patch at the hindwing base. This patch, the broad body and the absence of black on the legs, head and thorax separate this species from almost all others.

Namastay Bayram bhaijaan,

Ohh, today we don't have (almost) the same picture LOL

Wow, what a nice macro capture of the Scarlet Darter dragonfly! The details are superb and the POV is simply gorgeous. The DOF is greatly managed in this picture. The colors of the darter are just OOF. The blurred BG is certainly enhancing the beauty of picture and respective contrasts.

thanks and regards,
Paras Bhalla

Great picture, great animal :))

Hello Bayram!
Nice to see such beautiful male of Broad Scarlet :> Here I presented the some sex of the some species some time ago ;>
I like clarity and saturation in your photo. Also pose of the insect is nice for watching.
Greetings from Poland (again),
Radek

PS. Sorry for lack of contact during my trip to Turkey-Syria. During expedition I had to change my plans because of some serious health problems...

Interesante conjunto ya que compusiste bien los diferentes elementos. No es fácil captar bien esta especie por sus tonos, pero resolviste bien Bayram.
Un abrazo y buenas fotografías!

J. Ignasi.

Merhaba MF Bayram,
another close up subject. This red darter is lovely, the colours and huge shiny eyes. Very sharp and the shallow depth of field gives a strong impact to the overall composition.
Very details on the body give a pleasant appreciation.

regards,
Foozi

Merhaba Bayram Hocam, süper bir makro. Işığın yönü ve kompozisyon sıradışı güzellikte. Bu kareye kayıtsız kalmak mümkün mü?
Elinize sağlık.

Ciao Bayram, fantastic red dragonfly, wonderful dedication to a new member of TN, splendid details and excellent sharpness, lovely blurry BG, very well done my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Merhaba Bayram Barea,

I was away in the past few days, so I missed Your latest insect shots. This one's very nice - colors and compo are excellent, also sharpness - the closer wing isn't disturbing at all, although You know how sensitive my eyes are... :) But this is OK here.

Not only a great pic, but also a nice dedication to Your ex-student, a new (and now, just after commenting one of his images I realized), very talented TN-member. You have a great photo maniac community on the university, as it seems. This is what lacks from here - except for 'gondox', there isn't any serious Hungarian photographer on the site (maybe I, if I may be called "serious"). Good to see the situation differs in Izmir.

Best regards, László

an beutiful red dragonfly with good dof and pov.
Fine warm colours.

Gert

What a beauty! A really eye-catching insect, and an excellent close-up of its body. I think that's the reddest Dragonfly that I've ever seen.

Thanks,
John

Selam Bayram Bey,
Tek kelimeyle MUHTEŞEM. En çok sevdiğim türlerden biri. Birkaç birey aynı anda uçarken daha muhteşem oluyorlar.Bir de birşey sorucam. Yusufçuklara ilişkin türkçe isimlere nasıl ulaşabilirim?
