Argynnis pandora (=Pandoriana pandora) (Cardinal) [in Turk. Bahadır]

As you could remembered, I have uploaded a male of this large fritillary approx. a week ago. Today, I am sharing a female Cardinal which I encountered during my Black Sea trip in Taşköprü (Kastamonu) and I would like dedicate this posting to one of our TN friend and TN colleague:), Szabo Jozsef (joska) from Romania, as a butterfly admirer. The Cardinal is a relatively rare and very large butterfly with a wingspan of 60-75 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is yellow-brown, with green shading mainly on the hindwing. Parallel with the outer margin are several series of black marks. The underside ground colour is yellow-green. On the forewing, there is a large area of bright red. Also on the forewing there are scattered black marks. On the hindwing there is a series of smail white marks and a white line with silver highlights parallel with the outer margin. The female is usually larger than the male. The upperside has a greener hue than that of the male and on the underside there are larger and more pronounced silver-white marks, which create characteristic silver bands.

The Cardinal is a species of southern Europe, North Africa and central-western Asia, including Cyprus.

It is on the wing from the end of May until the beginning of November in a single brood. Overwinters in the larval stage, completing development the following spring. The larval host-plants are various species of violet (Viola spp. Such as, Viola sieheana, Viola adorata and Viola alba). It is found on agricultural land, forest, rocky slopes, river valleys and gardens from 500 m to 1700 m (2500 m in N. Africa). Attracted to nectar-rich flowers such as Onopordum spp., Centaurea spp., Cirsium vulgare (Spear Thistle) and cultivated Buddleja davidii (Buddleia).

Good Morning, Bayram MF,

Beautiful macro capture of the Cardinal Fritillary! Very well seen shot with great sharpness and from a well chosen POV. The shallow DOF works great here. The colors are very natural indeed. I like the contrast between the light BG and comparatively multicolored butterfly.

Hi LBB,

I was wondering where the red was on this Cardinal and then I read your notes. Just like the birds - the male has the red. You capture the most unique poses - she looks like she is just landing on the flower. A very pretty butterfly and of course you show her in nice natural colors and fine details. I love the composition with the space in front of her.

Beautiful post as always from You. Everything (compo, sharpness etc.) is nice - maybe a little more contrast should have been added, but that's just a personal taste. Otherwise a beautiful pic.

Little Hungarian grammar lesson. :) 'joska', the great photographer You dedicated the pic to, is a Hungarian living in Romania. Hungarian grammatics, unlike all the other languages except for Japanese, uses surname before the first name, and joska wasn't careful enough on his profile page and didn't change it. "Szabó" is his surname, and "József" is his first name. Anyway, I'm sure he will be very happy with Your great dedication.
