Lesser Spotted Fritillary (LSF) is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 15-23 mm.

LSF is very similar to its very widespread and common cousin the Spotted Fritillary, M. didyma which flies across the whole of south and central Europe, including Turkey, and north Africa. The definitive feature is the presence of absence of a vein on the hindwing - the discocellular vein. The underside marginal spots tend to be triangular (not round as in M. didyma). Also the upperside of hindwing has quite a complete band going across the wing.

It is found in South Europe, Turkey, Middle East, Iran, Afghanistan, South Russia, Kazakhstan, North Pakistan and North India. In Bulgaria widely distributed; in mountains up to 1700 m. The adult butterflies start to emerge in April and are on the wing until the end of August in two generation (bivoltine: April-early June and mid July- late August). The second brood often small, uppersides of the wings, ground colour is paler and black markings reduced.

The larval host-plants are various species of Verbascum species (Mulleins). Small larvae feed and hibernate in a silken web. Large larvae tend to live in loose companies, resting on upperside of the larval host-plant leaves. Often pupates on grass stems, sometimes at base of stones. LSF is a widespread butterfly and observed in hot, dry, flowery places, often amongst scrub; neglected cultivated areas from the sea level to 1700 m.

Hi LBB,

You have been finding the most wonderful butterflies for your subjects. This is a beauty in a marvelous open winged position. This Fritillary is absolutely glowing. The oranges and blacks and the details of the markings are exquisite. I love the symmetry of the antennae, head, body and wings. A beautiful dedication to so many of us on TN.
