Today the smallest butterfly species of Europe and Turkey! I observed firstly during our Mediterranean trip in Mersin Province, then i also observed and captured this rare and also sporadic beauty both in Uygur (Amasya Province) and Taşlıçiftlik village (Tokat Province, see attached WS-a male one) where i also have encountered with another rare species, Esperarge climene (Lesser Lattice Brown or Iranian Argus), sympatrically.

Grass Jewel (GJ) is the smallest butterfly species of Europe and Turkey with a wingspan of 10-20 mm.

The upperside ground colour of the male is brown. At the hind angle on the hindwing there are four round marks with an orange surround. The underside ground colour is grey/brown. Parallel with the outer margin there are several series of black and dark brown marks outlined with white. Additionally, at the hind angle there are four black ocelli with metallic blue highlights surrounded by bright orange. The female is similar to the male, but with slightly lighter markings overall.

GJ is a species of the eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East including Cyprus island, western Asia and central Africa.

The adult butterflies begin to emerge in March (sometimes from February) and are on the wing until October, in at least four broods (Polyvoltine).

It has been observed ovipositing on Andrachne telephioides, a small plant of the Euphorbiaceae family. Many references give the larval hostplant as Heliotropium hirsutissimum (Boraginaceae), but despite systematic investigation this has not been confirmed, even though both plant species are very common in Cyprus island, Israel and Sinai Penninsula. Hibernates as pupa.

GJ is rare species, although locally it may be quite numerous. It is recorded in hot, dry, stony places, sometimes on disturbed soils in cultivation areas. Some habitats are extremely small and it is distributed from sea level to 2000 m, almost always in close association with Andrachne telephioides. Flies close to the ground, resting on low vegetation and small stones. Feeds at small flowers such as Thymus and Heliohrysum species, but has also been observed to be attracted to Cistus species.

Lovely macro capture of the Grass Jewel with great details!
The colors are perfectly natural and very well shown through the capture. The sharpness and POV are well done along with nice use of the shallow DOF. The blurry BG looks great and adds beauty to the picture.

This little Grass Jewel is lovely and so dainty looking. A wonderful position on the flower that looks unfamiliar to me. The butterfly's lovely colors and markings show off so well against the pastel background.
