Mud-puddling

As you remember, yesterday I uploaded a shot on the “meeting”:) of male common blues, and today another one additional “meeting”, but this time apparently includes at least 3 species: Polyommatus icarus-Common Blue, P. thersites-Chapman's Blue and Cupido osiris-Osiris Blue (at middle single one which has a violet blue upperwings, partly seen). I photographed this behaviour from the SE of Mercan Mts., around a stream (Pülümür, Tunceli province).

Hope you can like this posting too!
TFL and have a nice new week!
Cheers,

Indeed, the phenomenon mostly seen in butterflies and involves their aggregation on substrates like wet soil, dung and carrion to obtain nutrients such as salts and amino acids. It's called “Mud-puddling” or “Puddling” (Click here for further reading). This behaviour has also been seen in some other insects, notably the leafhoppers. Typically, mud-puddling behavior takes place on wet soil. But even sweat on human skin may be attractive to butterflies. The most unusual sources include blood and tears.

May be you noticed that all aggregated butterflies were males as is in my previous post:). This behaviour is restricted to males in many species, and the presence of an assembly of butterflies on the ground acts as a stimulus to join the presumptive mud-puddling flock.

Males seem to benefit from the sodium uptake through mud-puddling behaviour with an increase in reproductive success. The collected sodium and amino acids are often transferred to the female with the spermatophore (a capsule or mass created by males of various animal species, containing spermatozoa and transferred in entirety to the female's ovipore during mating) as a nuptial gift:). This nutrition also enhances the survival rate of the eggs.

Hello Bayram,
As I see, this is the international meeting and the previous photo was "only" a national meeting... Or maybe the only butterfly bar in the area... Very well done, nice colors and composition! Cheers,

Hi LBB,

And the group gets larger!! A wonderful candid shot of these assorted Blues in a butterfly activity. Very interesting notes about mud puddling.

Impressive!

These "little miracles" seem to be waiting for you to photograph them, simply a pleasure to see these pictures it's almost like looking at that beautiful cluster of butterflies, captured with very good angle and a masterful approach.

Thanks MF, this type of photos, brighten the day.

Jesús
