Brown Argus (BA) is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 21-29 mm. The upperside ground colour is brown with a series of triangular orange marks in the submarginal area. On the forewing there is also a small, black mark at the end of the cell. The underside ground colour is light grey-brown. On the forewing and hindwing, parallel with the outer margin, is a series of black spots with a white outline. In the submarginal area there is a series of orange marks. The female is similar to the male. The grey/brown underside ground colour in butterflies of the first brood is replaced by light brown in later broods.

BA has a very wide range, present throughout all of central and southern Europe, North Africa, west and central Asia (including Turkey and Cyprus island) to Siberia. The adult butterflies start to emerge at the end of March and are on the wing until November in successive broods. The flight-period changes according to location, altitude etc. Overwinters as a pupa. Within its range there are records of various hostplants, such as Geranium tuberosum (Tuberous Crane's-bill), Erodium ciconium and various species of Helianthemum. The larvae form a symbiotic relationship with ants (Lasius spp. and Myrmica).

BA is rare in lowland areas. In intermediate elevations it is a little more common and on the highest peaks it is quite common. Observed in forests, maquis, garigue, phrygana, agricultural land and river valleys. In mountainous areas in the summer and autumn, it is often found close to springs or running water.

Hi Bayram,
difficulties are sheer endless when trying to shoot flying butterflies. You tried it and came away with a good shot, although the composition suffered in the process. This is no critique but a simple truth: to shoot flying butterfies is a horror, but ooh how much interesting and the results exciting. "Play it again, Sam" to quote from an old movie.
Best regards
Dietrich

Hello Bayram!
As I see you started to specialize in butterfly photos! And that is really good for entomologists like me :> Beautiful capture with natural, vivid colours and nice composition. Courtship in insects is not too often presented on photos soe every single picture like this one is really interesting as documentary image :)
TFS and have a nice weekend!
Greetings from Lodz!
