*****************************

Lesser Fiery Copper (LFC) is a spectacular, small butterfly with a wingspan of 25-35 mm.

The upperside ground colour of the male• is a deep ceramic orange with a thin black border along the outer margin and faint markings. On the hindwing there is an orange submarginal line, a series of black marks along the outer margin and a small tail at the hind angle. The ground colour on the underside of the forewing is orange and on the hindwing, grey. Parallel to the outer margin there are several series of black spots and an orange submarginal line. The upperside of the female has a slightly darker ground colour compared with that of the male and is heavily marked with a series of black spots parallel to the outer margin and within the discal and postdiscal areas. The underside is similar to that of the male. The butterflies of the first brood are larger and have smaller tails than those of later broods.

It is found in SE Europe (but also in central parts of Italy), Anatolia, Iraq, Cyprus and the coastal countries of Black Sea. It is on the wing from March until the beginning of December in Cyprus. However the flight-period is variable and in SE Europe is the between April and October. it seems that, at least in the lowland areas, it has four successive, overlapping generations. The larval host-plants are Polygonum species (such as Knot Grass), common plants of the Polygonaceae family.

LFC is locally common species found mainly in the lowland areas. It is less common at intermediate elevations and is absent from the higher peaks. It prefers dry, hot grassy, bushy and/or rocky places, ruderal habitats, river valleys etc. Recorded in coastal areas, maquis, garigue, phrygana, roadside verges, and agricultural land, from sea level to 1600 m. Found mainly close to water, in riverbeds and on farmland where Polygonum frequently forms dense mats.

Hallo Bayram
What a delightful view. The details and pose of this very brightly coloured butterfly is truly eye-catching, and here I especially refer to the big black eyes. A most appealing and bright and sunny sight. You have used the light well, emphasizing the vibrant colours to its best. The hairy details of the plant it is captured on is also very pretty. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards
Anna
