Argynnis niobe (Niobe Fritillary) [in Turk. Niyobe]

A very widespread and beautiful fritillary which I photographed our first trip in 2009 from the vicinity of İncesu (Kayseri province).

I would like to dedicate today’s posting to one of my heartfelt friends on TN, Catherine Dijon (CatherinD) who reached her 300th post -a great milestone- yesterday, for her valuable contributions to TN and us. I wish you all the best my friend! Thanks for all!

TFL and Have a nice new Week!
Cheers,

The Niobe Fritillary is a relatively large butterfly with a wingspan of 46 - 60 mm. This species has a brown-orange background with black dots and stripes. It flies together, with the superficially similar Dark-green fritillary, Argynnis aglaja and High brown fritillary, Argynnis adippe. The latter is particularly close in underside markings but a couple of features help. The forewing is concave, the row of underside silver markings (postdiscal) is continuous and the silver centered brown spots are smaller.

They, like many other species, are rather keen to take moisture, especially sweat ones from sea level to 2400 m. It flies in open flowery places usually with woodland in the vicinity which presumably provides some habitat for the larval foodplant Violet, Viola ssp. It is common throughout Europe and Turkey, but absent from Northern Europe, and is also found in Siberia, Russia, Iran, China and Korea.

The adult butterflies emerge in May and are on the wing until the end of August in a single brood. Eggslaid on dead vegetations near the larval-host plants. Hibernates as a fully-formed larva within its ovum-case. Large larvae (i.e., caterpillars) often rest in full sun on pieces of fallen tree-bark or dead wood.

Hi LBB,

If it hadn't been for TN I would only have seen a handful of butterflies this summer. They are too smart to hang around here. We are in the midst of what I hope is our last triple digit heat wave. Hopefully next month I will be out taking pictures again. This Fritillary is beautiful and a lovely dedication to Catherine. Vivid colors, excellent details and a lovely pose against the rocky setting.

Jane

Merhaba Bayram,
