Pseudophilotes vicrama (=Philotes vicrama) (Eastern Baton Blue) [in Turk. Himalaya Mavi Kelebeği] (Male)

A small, rare but beautifully colored butterfly (in flight) from İslahiye (Hatay province) which I photographed during our first trip of 2009 including E, C and SE Anatolian regions. I think this posting is the 1st male and also the 3rd shot of the species on TN.

Eastern Baton Blue (EBB) is a small butterfly with a wingspan of 18-27 mm. The upperside ground colour of the male is mauve-blue with a thin black border and white outer margin. A series of black marks in the white outer margin gives a somewhat laced appearance to the outer edge of the wings. On the forewing there is a small black spot at the end of the cell. The underside ground colour is light grey with a series of black marks parallel to the outer margin. On the hindwing there is also a series of orange marks in the postdiscal area. The upperside ground colour of the female is dark brown, almost black, with extensive blue highlights and markings similar to the male. The underside is similar to that of the male.

The range of EBB includes Eastern Europe, Turkey, the Middle East, including Cyprus Island, and central Asia to China. The adult butterflies start to emerge very early, from the end of February, and are on the wing until June, in at least two broods. Overwinters as a pupa. Observed ovipositing on Thymus capitatus (Thyme) which grows in phrygana, garigue and maquis. The larvae form a symbiotic relationship with ants.

EBB is relatively rare and local butterfly, which inhabits mainly lowland phrygana and garigue areas, close to the larval host-plants. Flies low, close to the ground and is attracted to the flowers of Phagnalon and Helichrysum from sea level to 1900 m.

Well taken macro capture of the adorable butterfly with wonderful clarity and great details! The colors are perfectly shown and especially, I like the textures on the wings of the butterfly. The POV and DOF are well managed. The blurry BG is wonderful and gives great contrast to the soft colored butterfly.

Wow, now I am impressed ! You really captured a flying butterfly ? I would not even dream of this, I am happy enough when I get a good picture of a butterfly sitting ! :-) This picture is just amazing.
