Neohipparchia statilinus (=Hipparchia statilinus) (Tree Grayling) [in Turk. Ağaç Karameleği]

Today another rarely seen butterfly which I observed firstly from the hillside of Taşlıçiftlik village (Tokat Province). I searched the TN for any shot of the species and I could find only six shots from Netherlands (one by Harm_digitaal), Spain (three by Maite and keko), Portugal (one by phlr) and Bulgaria (one by cataclysta)!, i.e. this is the 7th shot of the species and 1st shot from Turkey on TN!.

TFL and Cheers,

Tree Grayling (TG) is a relatively large-sized butterfly with a wingspan of 60-68 mm.

TG typically has two large black eyespots on the underside forewing ringed in yellow and two white spots in between. The hindwing is fairly uniform with a thin black discal line bordered on the outside by a dusty white band. Usually there is a small black spot near the anal angle. The general patters are usually present, but the shades of brown and intensity of the white markings on the hindwing vary. Some individuals (especially in north Africa, subspecies sylvicola) are rather uniform grey brown on the underside, the majority though have whitish scaling that give them marbled effect that is cryptic when resting on whiter rocks.

It is found in Central Europe, Southern Europe, North Africa, Turkey and the Caucasus. The adult butterflies fly in one generation (i.e. univoltine) from June to October. The larval host-plants are Bromus species, Bothriocola ischaemum, Stipa pennata and Lygaeum spartum. TG is observed in hot, dry, rocky areas, often amongst scrub or in open pinewoods, less often, deciduous or mixed woodland up to around 1500 m in Europe and Turkey, 2500 m in N Africa. It never rests with wings open. Usually rests on tree trunks in the shade of hot sunshine, or on rocks or soil when needing to warm up.

Nitida imagen de este insecto con un color uniforme supongo que para pasar desapercibido y poder camuflarse de los depredadores
Buen trabajo

Merhaba Bayram bhaijaan,

This is a lovely capture of butterfly on a rocky BG! I like the great contrast between the colors of the dark colors of the butterfly and the rocky structure underneath. The sharpness and POV are perfect.
Great composition!

Daha önce görmediğim bir başka tür. Karakteristik özelliğini ön kanatta görebiliyuorum. Notlar sysinde yakında tüm kelkebekleri tanıyacaz bu gidişle.
Elinize sağlık.

Merhaba Bayram hocam,

Mehmet
