Kızıl Şahin - Long-legged Buzzard - Buteo rufinus
Sereflikochisar - Ankara

Image captured on a village road in Sereflikochisar, close to the Salt Lake. There were 3 of them gathering around the same area, and sometimes flying together. Image taken handheld from the car window. When you are taking flying raptor shots from the car you really need a good driver who is responsive to your commands, and can be as fast as the raptor. Thanks to my driver (my husband) who willingly spent hours driving the car on various village roads and fields looking for raptors with me with windows open on a freezing winter day :o)

*
The Long-legged Buzzard (Buteo rufinus) prefers the dry open plains of Turkey, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary and feeds mostly on small rodents, although it will also take lizards, snakes, small birds and large insects.
It is similar in appearance to the Rough-legged Buzzard (Buteo lagopus), but larger in size (approximate length 60-65cm / 24") and more robust. There are many different colour forms, but usually Long-leggeds have clear orange tint to plumage, red or orange tail, pale head and largely white underwings. There is usually a distinctive black carpal patch and dark trailing edge to wing. Rump and trousers are often dark or deep rufous. Plumage varies from ghostly pale individuals to very dark birds. Some plumages are almost similar to those of the Steppe Buzzard, the Eastern subspecies of the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo vulpinus), but Long-legged Buzzards have longer wings and are more like Rough-Legged buzzards or even a small Aquila eagle.
Open, uncultivated areas, with high bushes, trees, cliffs or hillocks are favoured as nesting areas. Younger birds disperse north of breeding grounds and there are records from Northern Europe.

Beware, he's swooping on you, Selen!!!
A fantastic snapshot at 1/2000 which freezes the buzzard in the course of its downward swooping flight. The eye contact it makes with you really sends a shiver of excitement (or fear?) down your spine.
A great shot worthy of all praise out of which 50% should go to your husband :-).

Anyway, the timing here is simply impeccable and the resulting eye-contact is fantastic!
The details and pattern on the feathers are wonderful, too and the natural colors are lovely.

very excellent shot here. I love the stare and his pose in the air. You did very well with exposure since most of the under part of the bird is in shadow. Very good work here.

Gerçekten harika bir kare.
Tebrikler.

Hi Selene,

I would have to say this is my favorite of your series of images of this raptor, the under lighting is very nice which allows the viewer to see the beautiful plumage of the raptor in full color and detail. :)

...this photo of Buteo rufinus is truly magnific.
