Hi Deborah,
It's different. Focus on the eye/beak and short DOF has softened the neck feathers losing some definition. Colouring is excellent and there is no burn out of the whites. I would have liked to have seen it in portrait mode showing more of the bill.

Hi Deb,
Composition is subjective and the artist has free reign to create. Sometimes outside of the box works well..I posted a not-so-appealing toad headshot/extreme closeup awhile back, using nearly the same view from the side & behind..I like it :)

The wonderful shape of the pelican against the dark background is so effective. I really like the concept of this shot. The crop may be just a tiny bit too tight at the top and right. It's just a personal opinion but I'd prefer that the plume didn't touch the edge. Exposure and sharpness look good to me.
