“Angry Ocean” is the name of this photograph taken at scenic Black Head, A small community outside St. John’s. Black Head had the first Methodist church in Canada erected here in 1769. The plaque marking this Historic Site is near an ancient cemetery which is well worth a visit by people interested in the early history of the province and in the establishment of Methodism in Canada.
Another interesting historic site besides this sea is St. Joseph’s Chapel is architecturally valuable as a rare example of a small wooden schoolhouse in such close proximity to St. John’s. The simple design of the chapel speaks to a particular time and place. Blackhead was a tiny fishing community and St. Joseph’s Chapel was designed in a utilitarian manner. This plain, wooden, square one-room school with a steeply pitched gable roof stands as a testament to a more simple way of life, common in rural Newfoundland during this period.
