Bird of Prey
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
“Bird of Prey” is the name of this photograph taken this morning during breakfast.
As the watching the birds at the feeder, a larger bird flew by, then suddenly the feeder was bare.
This bird of prey, smaller than a crow, landed on a neighbor’s patio. He is looking into direction of another bird feeder which I will call Helen’s feeder. Underneath the patio, a small squirrel was hiding and hoping he wasn’t seen.
I quickly grab the camera and took several shots through the window glass. Using Peterson’s field guide of the eastern birds, I tried to identify this particular creature without success. With a bit of luck someone will identify this magnificent animal when I placed it on the web. |

Great shot! I'm not an expert but I think it's a Merlin. Great shot, thanks!

Jim:
You have captured an immature sharp-shinned hawk Accipiter striatus here, on balance probably a male. Merlins (and all other falcons, bar one) have dark eyes and longer wings. For a "grab" shot, I can't fault it - sharp, nicely lit and with a nice "catchlight" in the eye. Very nice..
Nigel.
