[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
“Pleased to meet you” is the name of this photo.
Owl butterflies, of which there are 21 different species are found in the rainforests and secondary forests of Central and South America. The name is derived from the presence of large "false eyes" ( ocelli ) on the underside of the hindwings. The eyespot may act as a decoy, diverting bird attack away from the vulnerable body, and towards the outer part of the hindwings. This use of decoy eyespots is well documented and used by a large number of butterfly species.
Owl butterflies are very large, and fly only a few metres at a time, so avian predators have little difficulty in following them to their settling place, which is nearly always on a tree trunk.
This as you can see is a resting place for the Clipper, which is an allusion to the species’ white wing patches that look like the multiple billowing sails on the mighty sailing trade ships of Cramer's day. Clipper adults are so brightly colored that they are easy to see, but protect themselves through unpredictability. Flying in erratic patterns through the tree canopy, clipper adults are difficult to attack or catch unless they stop to feed or rest.
He picked a great place to rest. The two relatively strangers, one from South America and one from South Asia, are getting along quite well as you can see.
They met in a greenhouse in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador as part of a butterfly exhibition which is being well received. I must return with my camera for more photos.

Hello Jim
What a lovely picture! A pity that you cut the rest of the Caligo, she is so beautiful too! Nevertheless I like a lot the composition, and sharpness, colors, DOF and composition are great.
My compliments and TFS.
