this is a beauty you have captured, it must be much easier to catch birds in the trees instead of insects on the ground wiht your bad back.
The picture is well composed wiht good POV and pose.

A beautiful shot Mike, they are stunning birds.
I was lucky enough to handle(*) a couple of woodpeckers over the weekend. They are incredibly calm and inquisitive.
You've captured a perfect pose and the colours are great.
Good comp and pov.

What is it, you and Alan having a pecker size competition? Sheesh! You BOTH have really big beautiful ones! But yours is an especially nice one with only a 200mm, where he was shooting at 266mm. So, adjusting for magnification levels... I think your must be slightly smaller, but you show better skills at having snuck up on him!

Those are impressive peckers. They make a prety cool sound too; not one that you would think that a woodpecker would make. I love the lighting around the pecker's face. Great photo Micheal!

as in michael jackson?? Great title, love the humour and the shot is super. I suppose you will hear all about the bright spots of the sun behind the bird, but to hell with that, this is nature and you get what you get. Awesome capture, too bad it isn't the ivory billed woodpecker, you would be cashin in right about now. The details are fantastic. :)
