The largest woodpecker ALIVE in North America is The Pileated Woodpecker.
This Male was busy hammering this old Oak tree as though it was Basswood. Pieces were flyin' all over the place. These guys are after insects etc.

Thanks for looking at my pecker, hope you like it. LOL
O, I know, I'm bad!!!!!!

Mike

Hi Mike,
this is a beauty you have captured, it must be much easier to catch birds in the trees instead of insects on the ground wiht your bad back.
The picture is well composed wiht good POV and pose.
Great details and lovely colours.
Excellent work, mf.

Good POV, lovely bird and typical look of woodpeckers.Nice shot, TFS.

A beautiful shot, Great background, pov, composition and sharpness! Great photo of a beautiful bird

A beautiful shot Mike, they are stunning birds.
I was lucky enough to handle(*) a couple of woodpeckers over the weekend. They are incredibly calm and inquisitive.
You've captured a perfect pose and the colours are great.
Good comp and pov.
Thanks for sharing.

HI Mike,
just perfect, wow, to make such a sharp shot of this shy bird inside a forrest where you don't have so much light - that's marvelous.
Very well done, I like it so much

Very impressive pecker Mike,

Good detail, colours and sharpness. exposure and lighting are good. Good POV and composition.

I had to laugh when Julia stated that she 'handled a couple of peckers over the weekend'.......not all English girls are like that... LOL

What is it, you and Alan having a pecker size competition? Sheesh! You BOTH have really big beautiful ones! But yours is an especially nice one with only a 200mm, where he was shooting at 266mm. So, adjusting for magnification levels... I think your must be slightly smaller, but you show better skills at having snuck up on him!

WoW!

J'en rêve la nuit de rencontrer un grand Pic. Bravo tout est parfait.

Merci Mike.

Those are impressive peckers. They make a prety cool sound too; not one that you would think that a woodpecker would make. I love the lighting around the pecker's face. Great photo Micheal!

Wow, what a nice hairy pecker you have! LOL! Amazing capture, you crazy Canadian. The details and sharpness are spot on, and the lighting couldn't be better. Well done!

Alli

P.S. Want to stow away in my bag to Italy next week? !!!

as in michael jackson?? Great title, love the humour and the shot is super. I suppose you will hear all about the bright spots of the sun behind the bird, but to hell with that, this is nature and you get what you get. TFS and well done, points later, today out [one of few days I got to crit and damn points finished]

Hi Mike! I knew this was your photo as soon as I read the caption!!!! I'm impressed! Oh, with the photo too! Linda

Yes, I like your pecker :):), naughty Mike!!!

Great composition and sharpness. Perhaps one day I'll see a pecker, we don't have peckers in Australia.

Awesome capture, too bad it isn't the ivory billed woodpecker, you would be cashin in right about now. The details are fantastic. :)
