I think it was the first day that I took my Canon G10 camera along with me to walk into the woods, close to the lake where I live. That's the place I usually go with Toupti, and now with Sherwin, when I want to walk the dogs. I am posting this not to look behind but forward, in the sense that very soon, I will feel the earth again under my feet, I will smell the soil and the leaves and the new plants sprouting. I will hear more species of birds and soon enough, I will also hear the wind blowing in the leaves of the trees.

This picture represents so well a feeling I get when I walk. This is a very "normal" wooden place in Québec, a typical wooden area. Nothing special about it, to say so. But when I walk, I look around and suddenly, I don't know why, but I find a place particular, whether beautiful or serene... it just grasps my attention.

That's what happened here. I remember it vividly, it's the alignment of the trees. The trees look to me as if they were bending to relax, just relax. They offer to the eyes an opening, a path to follow. I also loved the muted colours, the beautiful leaves on the ground. Fall can be such a magical season, it is by far my favourite, and to photograph it's fantastic. The colours are superb and subtle or can be bright and lively, like the song of a swan.

We see a birch tree to the left, with some of its bark torn apart. Probably by the kids coming to the summer camp close to this place (in fact, the summer camp is the owner of this wooden area). The camp is having either poor kids or handicapped children, heavily handicapped children who never go in nature otherwise. A lot of people give their time for the tasks at spring, with the help of the federal police (Gendarmerie royale du Canada, forgot the name in English). They even bring a big huge boat on the lake and they go out with it, the kids yelling their hearts out because they have too much fun.

This wooden place is the place where the poor kids go to play, there is equipment where they can play on. It's hard for me to describe to you, but it's like a playground in the woods. I think that the vocation of this place is touching and I am very happy that children from the city come here and play in such a place. Right by the lake, where they can go out and ride on a boat, a canoe or this big floating boat where the kids in rolling chair embark on for a ride. They sometimes come and play on the beach very close to my home. Love has composed a song entitled: Handicap Blues, in homage to these kids accepting very often their fate whereas we, "normal" people, sometimes complain for nothing.

Well, I shall go back and work now. I wanted to introduce you to this small place where I walk that I discovered last fall. I shall take many pictures of the flora this summer.

Thank you!

Francine

Hi Francine,
Simple yet beautiful image (at least to me, who's a lifetime hiker), and the forest reminds me to ours. For me nothing's better than being out there (hm... sex, but nothing else really). Thank You for the wonderful pic and the very personal note.
Best regards from Hungary, László

Hi Francine,

Both your words and picture are beautiful. I had forgotten just how wonderful it is to stroll in the forest until we were in the Rain Forest in Australia this month. It is early autumn there so along with the big trees and still green leaves there were all the sounds of the birds and other creatures. I get the same feeling looking at this lovely shot as I did there.

Jane

Hello Francine,
At first I though this was a familiar scene of tree trunks in the late autumn, but on looking more carefully I was struck by the diversity of tree species in such a small area, something we don't see in the natural forests of Sweden.
The composition is great and the depth of perspective really gives one that the feeling of being there.
Thank you for this experience,
Ivan

Hello Francine,
The woods always held mystery and adventure when I was a boy. I would dream I was a great explorer, the first one to see this scene. But that was yesterday as you say, tomorrow it is the same, I still feel the same after all these years. Your image portrays your love of these woods superbly my friend, thank you.
Rick
