Another shot of great gray owl. ;-)))
Hope you like this one!

Thanks for viewing and comments.

Great Gray Owls Strix nebulosa

With a large circle of feathers around those bright yellow eyes, you might think that the great gray owl is one of the prettiest owls. However, those feathers are not just for looks but are actually covering the owl's ears. Instead of having ears like ours, a great gray owl has a circle of feathers which channel sound into holes on the sides of the owl's head. These holes are the owl's ears.

Great gray owls have incredible hearing. This comes in handy during the winter. Normally great grays eat mice and other rodents, but in the winter there is usually a thick layer of snow hiding their prey. No worries, a great gray owl can hear a mouse running under two feet of snow. It will then plunge feet first into the snow and catch the mouse. This leaves behind an interesting track in the snow. It often shows the imprint of the wing feathers as the owl flapped to take off.

Winter is one of the best times to spot great gray owls. In the summer time, the owls are deep in the boreal forest, but in the winter the snow gets deep and many of the owls leave the forest in search of food. They can often be seen along roadsides sitting on power poles or roadside signs.

Some winters, the great gray owl population experiences an irruption. During an irruption many individuals leave the forest and show up in unpredictable places. For great grays, it usually happens following a summer when there was an abundance of food. This means that more young were able to survive and there are more birds in the population. When winter comes, these birds travel in search of food, as there is not enough in the forest to support them all. When irruptions occur great grays are more likely to be seen, making winter a great time to spot them.

Lovely photo ! I like the way the owl is staring at the camera :). Nice job with the exposure : it is a dark bird but you did not wash out the whites on the BG though.

Hi Helene,
This is a superb shot!
Very sharp image and amazing detail,
excellent framing.
Thanks for sharing!

GREAT capture Helene, what a facial expression!

As to the "too much depth of field" that has been mentioned, I find that impossible to judge with the snow BG: there is just one plant and lots of blurry snow, so how anyone could conclude what is suggested is at least beyond my humble abilities. Nor would I expect a terribly bright image at f/13 and 1/2000.

Looks very much authentic to me.

Wonderful shot, Thanks!

Bonjour Hélène!

Belle image de l'oiseau. Le focus est très bon. L'exposition pas trop mal non plus, peut-être un tantinet sombre. Mais cela peut facilement s'ajuster à l'écran.
Très bon travail, merci de l'envoi.

Well, that's a winner in all ways: composition, exposure, focus and note.

...and hand held, hmmm. Well I'm impressed!!! TFS

Hi Helen another Bravo for the quality and the clarity of this owl in flight..

Hi, Helen.
Wonderful predator bird. Excellent sharpness and DOF for flight shot. Nice composition and eye contact with photographer. Low flight makes it also somehow special.

Wow Helene...this is an awesome shot. Perfect timing and very nicely contrasted against the snow. Great work!

Hello Helene.

Really a fantastic capture with so many details, excellent sharpness/dof and very natural colours. The handling of light is excellent without burning the snow at all. The composition is just perfect. Among other things that make this picture so great is that you did not clone ourt the small twigs in the snow - some would have done that to get a more clean picture. I am very happy that you did not.
