Habitat

Il fréquente les plans d'eaux calmes à faible débit (marais, étangs,...) bordés d'arbres et d'arbustes ainsi que les fossés inondés bordés d'aulnes.

À observer

Les deux sexes sont identiques. Les pattes sont jaunes, le cou marron, la calotte et le dos vert foncé. Il est plus petit qu'une corneille.

Saviez-vous que ?

C'est un oiseau discret et farouche ; lorsqu'on le surprend, il hérisse les plumes de sa tête et hoche brusquement la queue. Son nom générique est un dérivé de butor et de -ides (semblable) : sans doute parce qu'il ressemble aux butors.

Hi Joseph,
wow a photo of a Green Heron that actually shows it as a green coloured bird as so many photos I have seen only hint at the colour.The pov gives a nice prospective with the bird crouched at the waters edge just waiting for something to swim by and that intense eye is lively as well.A fine and enjoyable photo and I thank you for sharing it with us. I tried a workshop to see what a darker contrast could do for this lovely bird,just for the fun of it as there is nothing wrong with this capture,I hope that you like it. Bob
