Mistaya Canyon, in Banff National Park is a spectacular slot canyon close to the Icefields Parkway It's a half kilometer (about 10 minutes hike) on an old logging road to a bridge over the cascading Mistaya River. At this point, the river has cut a series of rounded slots, or pockets, in the rock. It's deep and steep and very impressive.

Hi Richard,
a great POV chosen here to show the diversity of this magnificant landscape, the river leads the eye nicely to those impressive peaks in the BG.
There's a good foreground interest too, although i think you can see the edges around that blue where you've done your PP?
A fine shot from a beautiful place.

What an imressive landscape Richard? You have done it very well and it looks super! Bravo and TFS.

Yes, I am watching - watching and watching. The blue sky, then the snow-clad mountains, then the journey of a reverine just like a young cutie ballet dancer through woods, rocks with colours and tunes.

Hello Richard,
This is a beautiful landscape, the true wilderness!
Impressive how the river has cut through the slate to find a way, and the colour of the water tells about glaciers...
Well composed image, but a bit big for my screen resolution!
Greetings,
Pablo -

No shortage of landscapes to shoot there! This is nice with the interesting rock shapes and the zig zag of the river. I think once you master using layers, you'll find pp easier than trying to isolate areas with selection tools. The cyan looks a bit unnatural to me. An alternate composition option may have been to turn the camera a bit more to the left thereby missing the two cutoff trees on the right and places the foreground water a little more off center. Sharpness is very good. You might try taking more than one shot of a scene or bracketting your shots and blending them on the computer...blend the correctly exposed water with another shot with correctly exposed rocks. There are applications that can blend them automatically (high dynamic range) but you can do it manually with PSE4

Evelynn : )

I would also echo Evelynn's comments about the cyan as well as some of your masking work. This shot in bright sunlight is a hard one to pull off within a single photo. Not sure if you shoot in RAW or not, but doing so would give you a bit more control in post processing with regard to exposure and white balance.
Evelynn's last comment concerning either bracketing (you'll need a tripod for this) or else taking one shot and exposing one for the highlights and then one for the shadows and then using something like pixmantic to do a highlights/ shadows combination of the two does wonders.

Well doggone it if I didn't learn something. First I knew this was a beautiful location. Others have posted as well...and I learned how to blend more than one pic...Super idea and thanks Ev and Tim for that. Otherwise, a wonderful vertical landscape.

Hi Richard

A great shot - the composition is excellent - I like the way you have used the canyon to lead the eye into the shot. The exposure is really well handled also.

Hi Richard,
Wonderful shot of this stunning scene with lovely colours and sharp details. The snow capped mountains, The tall green trees, the zig-zag river and the fabulous rocks presents a fine effect. Excellent POV to capture the atmosphere here and very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Richard,

What impressive photograph of this water fall. The water is coldblue. The mountains on the BG give a great perspectiv on it. The river lead you to the mountains. A good composition. Sharp as well. And yes, when you are looking very good, you can see what PaulH means. Regards and TFS Bob
