[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This shot is a different Elk from my previous posting, though it was the same day. A young bachelor bull was standing at the edge of the meadow checking out this older Bulls harem. Momments after this shot he chased the youngster away. He was very protective of his cows and headed my direction a number of times, but......having learned from being chased previously, I was staying far enough away.

Gee, I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to get closer... (okay, my evil humor, aside...) Actually, what amazes me is the puffs of breath you got. The arch of the head, the glare in the eye, and wow, what a rack (to quote Angrybone)! This is a beautiful scene. Nice action going on here as he protects 'his women' and excellent dof. Overall, the composition works - I have a good idea of how cold it is. Nice work.

This is a nice wildlife capture John. It has your usual "something extra" that distinguishes so many of your images. In this case it is the breath vapor. It is probably just a personal quirk of mine, but I generally prefer to have the whole animal in a shot, or a portrait. I always feel a bit uncomfortable with an animal cut right in half.

Hi John,

You have done well with this one - you have caught the steam perfectly. Those are a pretty mean looking set of antlers, I certainly wouldn't want to be on the business end of them. Good level of detail and nice natural colours and light. Not sure about the composition and I might have gone for either the whole of the animal or a tighter crop on the head. But a great shot and you have certainly captured a sense of what was going on.

Kind regarrds,

Mike

Hi John

Wonderful shot. The back-lit breath is excellent. The antlers are superb and the angle of the stags head is wonderful.

Fine elk John, I think I would prefer to be a bit further back...and in a 4x4!! I get the impression he is the boss........

good work and a cracking image.

Hi again, can't help but comment, your photos are so beautiful. What a great light, I love the tiny herbs under the elk filled with pink light as is the breath of the animal. The light is great, the moment, the pose of the animal. Thank you very much,

francine
