Summertime on the praries generates a lot of thunderstorms. Luckily, though, I am far enough north to miss the tornadoes. So yesterday I heard we had a "severe thrunderstorm warning." Boy, was it. It was too loud to sleep, so I thought I'd get up and try to take a couple pictures. I'm glad I did!

This was shot through my window (hey, I wasn't going out in this!). I used a 30-second exposure, but often closed the shutter if a particulary good flash appeared, to avoid "washing it out" with the sheet lightning. In this case, though, I got multple strikes in the 30 seconds (I count 3 or 4).

This was filtered with Noiseware (twice), cropped, rotated a bit, I cloned some dirt off the window, I adjusted the curves, sharpened, resized, and framed.

If you want to try messing with the image I will post an earlier version with less PP as a workshop. Cheers, all!

Hello Mike,
This is a great capture!
Beautiful colours... Fine details...!
Pleasing effect by the city lights, very well done... Pity it doesn't come with sound!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Very great Shot! Will I ever capture something like this? Will I ever be brave enough? Well done.

Hi Mike
HOLY SMOKES....WOW what a nice shot. Lightening is so hard to capture. I love the lightening bolt on the right, i'm sure it did some damage.

We had storms roll through Cochrane last night too. The thunder was so loud and lightening so close it shook the house. I heard Calgary got it even worse, lots of power outages. The storms usually intensify as they head east.
Thanks! Janice your neighbor to the north :)

great shot - you are lucky to have such a 'good' view from the kitchen window to allow for this kind of shot. From the looks of things, not many people slept through it.

Great shot and great notes.

Bonjour Mike,
WOW I always dreamed to take a shot like this. It's good also that you thought to expose at f22. Congratulations!...Again

Wow!
That is an awesome shot, Mike.
Zeus unleashed.
Very clever of you to know what settings to use, etc...
to capture such an amazing view of the sky during a thunderstorm.
Great job and TFS. : )

Hello Mike,
Really impressive storm and very well done!
Beautiful color scale with the redish lights of the city and the nuances of blue and purple. Thunderstorms are very seldom on GC,
maybee a small one every two years. It's a pity , I like to watch them.

Impressive and not as easy to capture as people think.
You've done a fine job here, the exposure is very good.

Dramatic.
