Hi All,
I am not sure why but birds with blue plumage are among my favorites. Steller's Jays stay in Waterton all year so when we were in Waterton on Thursday I was so happy to see some, four to be exact. This one was perched on a birch tree giving anyone who would listen a piece of his mind. I find all Jays noisy.

General Description

By Nora Bryan

This dark iridescent blue cousin of the Blue Jay is a bird of the mountains. In Alberta it lives only in the mountains. It may breed in the southern Rockies around Waterton, and is sometimes seen in Banff and Jasper. It is far more common west of the continental divide, in BC.

Steller's Jays prefer montane coniferous forests above 1200 metres. In winter they might be attracted to feeders in mountain towns, where they share the bold and aggressive habits of their blue-jay cousins.

Like other corvids, the Steller's Jay is an opportunistic feeder. Everything from nestlings to nuts might make a tasty meal. Once emboldened, they will take food scraps readily at campsites.

The bulky nest of twigs, bark and leaves is molded with mud and lined with grass and rootlets. The three to five bluish green eggs are marked with brown. Young are fledged 18 days after an incubation period of 16 days.

Rick,

Great shot! I've only seen this bird once on my trip to the west coast but it did make an impression on me. I must admit that the blue jays look wonderful (although their behavior leaves a bit to be desired). Anyways, I was on the phone, talking to one of my friends and decided to put your image through a workshop. I don't usually do so much post-processing but since I had a few minutes to spare, I decided to make a few extra adjustments. See what you think.

Best Regards,

Martin

Hi Rick!

Indeed, the bird is very beautiful. Your picture highlights its beauty very well. The natural colours are well reflected in the natural environment. The picture transmits the impression of reality, not of a stage-managed picture.

Kind regards

Markus

Hello Rick !
I had never seen this bird before, but he's truly gorgeous, I love his blue color and his "crest" (or whatever you might call the feahers that stand up on its head). The composition as well as the POV are splendid, and the blurred BG is wonderful too. Very well done !
Valérie.

I too like birds with blue plumage, Rick.
This Steller's Jay is so cute. You have captured its blue plumage very well.
I also like its dark crested head. Your point of view gives us the best possible viewing angle.
Thanks for sharing this lovely image and best regards.

Hi Rick,

I like blue birds too but we have none here :-( When I was in Bryce National Park they said there were Steller's Jays there but I never got to see one. I love the pose on the branch with his beak opened. Beautiful colors and nice details of the lovely plumage, face and crest. Those shades of blues are wonderful.

Hello Rick
Nice capture. Well done.

Hello Rick,
How are you?
Definitely blue and beautiful. Blue birds are not always easy to capture though. I think this is partially due to the darker tones.
Apparently no problem here.
Beautiful bird with that particular crest. Actually it has an upside down version as well.
Maybe a new bird in TN. Guess so.
Well done again. Wonder how many animals you didn't capture yet in your 'geo'.
Well done.

Hi Rick. WE dont see many bird with blue feathers in England . This Jay is unusual with the feathers on its head. You have taken it with good detail and natural looking colours. With a good POV/DOF. well done TFS.
Nick..
